John Murphy Gone from Circle 7?

Rumor has it that Friday was John Murphy's last day at Circle 7 in Buffalo. Cuts there have been wide and deep, but that would leave them with Jeff Russo as the entire Sports department.

Recent repainting & installation of a new automation system indicate that Silver Point Capital is putting lipstick on this pig.

Shocked to hear 7 is still going downhill, I thought the were able to find some grounding after the bottom fell out back in 2003. As a triva note, Murphy was the only real channel 7 anchor to appear in Bruce Almighty's version of WKBW.

Good Move

Hey, they'll have "updated local news segments".

You want to talk about sad? Think about what it must be like to walk into that building every day.

Good luck, Murph. You've made a good choice that will pay off in the long run. Radford is probably cursing the day he re-upped with the Rockheads.

There was a quote from a station staffer in the first of Pergament's columns about this situation which hit the nail on the head. "It's depressing". Everyone at the station hopes (probably unrealistically) that the place will be bought by someone who actually gives a rat's ass what the on-air product looks and will send Ransom's robot (Ross Overdrive) to the dumpster, where it rightfully belongs...

I don’t blame John Murphy for leaving Channel 7 after being told he has to take a huge cut in salary; especially considering all the years he worked at that station. This take-a-cut-in-pay or leave philosophy seems to be the norm at most broadcasting operations today. It’s another reason why having a few companies own most of the radio or TV stations in one market sucks. Eventually this philosophy is going to bite these operations in the a$$ because older viewers are not going to stick around if their favorite on-air personalities are replaced by Barbie and Ken types who have little to no experience but will work for next to nothing just to enhance their resumes. Those individuals should also be concerned because I predict that in the very near future more television news operations may cease to exist as TV stations are opting to scuttle local news in order to save money. As for local radio news, in many markets that’s corpse has been buried for years.

Taping PM Buffalo in the morning because it's too expensive to do live in the afternoon? Wow that is sad!

It's more of a logistical move. Many of the segments from AM Buffalo are used in the afternoon. When guests are booked for either show, they come in at the same time and everything gets done at once. It does save money in that Linda Pelligrino doesn't have to be in the building after noon...

It's still sad in that it's one less live show that's being done locally...

If I had twelve million dollars
And an old bottle of wine,
If I could get Tom Jolls back
Could I turn the station into #1?
If I went back to Eyewitness News
With Irv Weinstein at elven
Baby could I turn the station into #1?

Former Channel 7 sports director John Murphy has sued the station’s owners to get his one-year, non-compete clause voided so he can immediately pursue a broadcasting job.

According to Scott DeLuca, Murphy's attorney, the suit filed in Erie County Court is asking that a one-year non-compete clause be set aside. In addition, DeLuca said the suit contends that Murphy's contract was breached when the station terminated him the morning of what were to be his final evening broadcasts on Sept. 16. Murphy decided to leave Channel 7 after rejecting a new contract, which contained a pay cut.
[EDIT]

Hmmm.... wondering where he might be headed...

This is why non-compete clauses need to be BANNED. They are a steaming pile of B.S.

Seriously, we live in a country based on freedom and capitalism. If Station X wants to pay you twice as much as Station Y, you should be able to tell Station X to stick it where the sun don't shine. It's called a fair market. If you want the goods, you have to be willing to pay the price.

While a fair number of people in this business ARE grossly overpaid, I still think non-competes are crap. Especially when stations put the workers with the sub-par salaries under non-competes. Your only option to make significantly more money is to leave the business or leave town. Not a pleasant decision to make when you like the area you're living in, but you're just a lowly reporter, producer or photog. If non-competes weren't allowed, Station X would be forced to pay people more decent wages, in order to keep everyone from defecting to Station Y.

It's even worse when non-competes remain in effect even after you've been FIRED. I can almost side with stations enforcing non-competes to keep people from jumping ship on their own, but if the station lets you go, you should be free to seek employment anywhere you want. To be let go from a job solely for money reasons, then to be told you're not allowed to do similar work anywhere else in town for a year... this is America?

Other states have banned 'em... let's go, New York! We can ban people from eating fatty donuts, but we can't stop broadcasters from treating their employees like slaves. What a wonderful place to live.

Who ever said broadcasting was fair? It's a business and most media companies care only about the bottom line and could give a rats a$$ about their employees, unless of course your one of the few long-time veterans that brings in ratings; then they "might" take care of you. I agree that no-compete clauses are one-sided and should be banned in New York. But remember New York government is controlled by big business; plus we have a governor more interested in allowing illegals to have drivers licenses than doing what's fair for the citizens of this state. I hope Murphy wins his lawsuit.
