John Murphy Tests Positive for COVID

The Buffalo News is reporting John Murphy will miss Sunday’s Bills game on WGR after testing positive for COVID. He’s vaxxed, and according to the News, is suffering some cold-like symptoms. I wish Murph a speedy recovery. He hopes to be back for the Indy game.

A WFAN host in NYC by the name of Paul Dottino will call Sunday’s game against the Jets on WGR. The News article says Dottino has apparently done some radio play-by-play for the Giants. In the Bills’ 60+ year history, the Bills have had just three play-by-play announcers — the legendary Van Miller, Murph and Al Meltzer when KB had the games in the ‘70s.

Murph says he hasn’t missed a game in 20 years. Do any of you old-timers remember anyone having to fill in for Van or Meltzer before that? I was in college in the ‘70s so I didn’t hear every Bills game on the radio. I don’t remember anyone having to fill in for Van. But that’s not to say it didn’t happen.

Still, it could very well be that Dottino will become just the fourth announcer in Bills history to do PBP on the radio. That’ll make for an interesting trivia question some day. I know I’ll have my radio on for part of Sunday’s game.

There's lots of ways to catch COVID-19, but a team devastatingly losing a football game isn't one of them. Follow the science...

way to ruin a joke and have no sense of humor

Rick Azar from WKBW called games in the 70's too.
Rick Azar and Ed Rutkowski were color analysts for Al Meltzer during the KB years. Again, that was a period when I wasn’t paying close attention. Who knows? There could have been a game where Meltzer couldn’t make it, and Azar filled in as the play-by-play announcer. But it was Meltzer who had the official PBP gig at KB. Azar did PBP on TV for Bills pre-season games.

In the late 60s WBEN announcers(and maybe engineers too) went on strike and a few games were heard on WGR. I think Phil Soisson called the games on GR(but memory is hazy).

At our Saturday coffee with mostly retired radio guys Saturday, the topic of the ‘68 strike at WBEN came up and how it affected Bills games. But no one could remember any details. I must have been listening because I was a young Bills fan. I have no memory of this. Thanks so much! I’ll share this with our group next Saturday.

Covid-19 is no laughing matter, having claimed more than 750 thousand lives in the USA. Here in Western New York, the rate of positivity (around 7% per 100,000) is higher than that of New York City; and hospitalization rates have been going up, although not catastrophic. John Murphy noted that he was double vaccinated. He was present at the Buffalo Broadcasters Association awards ceremony which was held on November 4th which was attended by about 300 people. There's some specualation that he may have contracted the virus at that event. Here's hoping that he has a complete and quick recovery, and soon returns to calling radio play-by-play for the Bills.

COVID is no joke in spite of my earlier light hearted remark. No malice intended. Since Murphy is vaccinated, then his odds of recovery are very good. The unvaccinated are the ones who are having the worst outcomes.

Unfortunately, many broadcasters have been spewing dangerous misinformation. Thousands have died needlessly due to lies and stupidity from the anti vax crowd...
