John Rooney leaving Sox radio/WSCR

I'm trying to put a puzzle together: WSCR just took White Sox radio from WMVP and said "if it ain't broke don't fix it" as their mantra for keeping Rooney & Farmer as announcers. Now Rooney is quitting and says WSCR/CBS low-balled him on salary. AND, it gets tricky here, is it true that WSCR PD Mitch Rosen - a former PD at WMVP who helped get the Sox from WMVP to WSCR - used to represent Rooney as his agent up until 6 months ago? What's going on here? (FYI: There's a good story on it in the Saturday Sun-Times)

It would be awesome if TOM PACIOREK replaced him! I was under the impression that the broadcasters worked for Reinsdorf? I'll have to read the paper.

Can't worry about Rooney, we* have a World Series to win.

*Isn't it funny when guys talk about their teams they speak in the first person. Like I'm part of the team or something.

Good heads up on the article Whitey, and glad to see your a Sox fan! See, we have alot in common pal.

Most of the time the agreement between the flagship station and the team is the announcing team is paid by the station with the team getting final say on who gets the job.

Some times the clubs own broadcast rights and buys times on a station and runs all parts of the broadcast. The Colts own the rights to the Colts Radio broadcasts and Buys Time on Clear Channel's WFBQ In Indy. Bob Lamey who uses to work for Emmis's WIBC and was the Voice of the Colts when WIBC Had the Colts rights from 84-91 and 95-97 on WIBC, when the Colts to took the rights in house in 98 and moved the colts rights to WFBQ. The Colts wanted to retain Bob Lamey as voice of the Colts. So Bob Lamey had a choice to make stay at Emmis and WIBC or leave and Join the Colts. He Chose the Colts.

IIRC, Jack Brickhouse, Vince Lloyd, and Lou Boudreau worked for WGN when P.K. Wrigley owned the Cubs. Even after the Tribune Company bought the team, I believe the announcers' were (and are) on the WGN payroll.

The Sox hired their announcers for years, going back to at least John Allyn in the '70s. In fact, Harry Caray was fired by Allyn in 1975 and rehired by Bill Veeck when he bought the team the next year. Jerry Reinsdorf fired Jimmy Piersall in 1983, not corporate SportsVision (which he partially owned). I'm surprised to learn that the announcers work for the station now, and not Reinsdorf.

In any case, whoever is responsible for paying John Rooney's salary should have given him whatever he wanted. He'll be missed.
