Unfortunately it wasn't an April Fools joke. At the end of Sunday's NBC Nightly News, John Seigenthaler announced that he is leaving the anchor desk. It came as a shock to viewers:

"This is my last broadcast on NBC Nightly News. It's been my privilege to be associated with this news organization for the last 11 years, so a few thank you's are in order.

First, thanks to my colleagues, my friends in New York and around the world for their inspiration and support. A special thanks to you the viewers for your loyalty to this network and in particular this broadcast. And thanks to my dear family -- finally, we've got our weekends back.

I'm John Seigenthaler, reporting from New York. For all of us at NBC News, good night.
Tv Newer reports that Lester Holt will be the new weekend anchor for Nightly news.

CORRECTED: TV Newser reports that Lester Holt will be the new weekend anchor for Nightly news.

Where is Seigenthaler heading to? Why did he leave NBC? Does this mean the end of MSNBC airing those prision/lockdown stories?

Gary

An article I read stated that John knew of this for months and that his leaving was part of NBC Universal's "NBC 2.0" 'restructuring' program.

Or, and this is just conjecture, but could he be headed back to the Pacific Northwest, where he earned his chops as a local reporter/anchor in the 80's??? Just a shot in the dark...

That would be interesting to see him back in the Seattle Television market, but who would hire him? KING, KOMO, KIRO, and Q all have strong male evening anchors in place.

John also spent quite a bit of time in Nashville...he sported a pencil-thin
moustache, and was nicknamed "Howard Sprague" by competitors.
He's grown tremendously since then...I'd bet CBS, but I'm just guessing.

I'm sure Steve Raible at KIRO is a nice guy and I'm betting his likeability Q is high, but hasn't KIRO been struggling with their ratings in recent years?

KIRO has been struggling since they went "Out of the Box" in the mid-90's. They had a great run from the late 70's through the 80's with the Eyewitness News "Happy Talk" format with Gary Justice, John Marler, Susan Hutchison, Harry Wappler's Weather, and the late, legendary Wayne Cody on Sports! Oh, and I almost forgot Chopper 7 and the KIRO News Jet, too! Did any other station in the country have a news jet???

KING hit bottom during the early 80's when they didn't change with the times. I believe that the absolute bottom was around 1984. For some reason, they tried to change the name to Newscenter 5 and some of their news intros had Newscenter 5 and half still had KING 5 News. They later tried to fix the goof by saying "Live from Newscenter 5, this is KING 5 News!"

Then, Jean Enersen took one of her 3 week vacations. I remember Aaron Brown reading 7 minutes of animal stories at the end of the 5pm newscast. Then, later the same week, Aaron Brown was hospitalized with a minor heart attack. Darned if Hattie Kaufmann, who was the weekend anchor, didn't fill in on every single newscast! The station literally disintegrated that summer.

He's got too much credibility to work for Fox. Probably headed for CBS.

CBS? Now there's a news organization just oozing with credibility.

oh stuff it. like fox news channel has ANY credibility????????

Seigenthaler could conceivably go to Fox or CBS. As for this credibility business, I think CBS was right to purge the fraud Mary Mapes and her enabler, Dan Rather. FNC's news content is solid; it's the analysis/opinion shoes that tilt right, just as most of MSNBC's and some of CNN's shows tilt left.

I wouldn't be too worried about Seigenthaler, though. With his family connections, he'll land somewhere.
