John Skipper resigns from ESPN, citing substance abuse problem

In a shock to the sports and TV world, longtime ESPN chief John Skipper is resigning as a result of what he described as a long-term problem with substance abuse.

George Bodenheimer, Skipper’s predecessor as ESPN boss, will serve as acting chairman while Disney searches for a replacement.

“I have struggled for many years with a substance addiction. I have decided that the most important thing I can do right now is to take care of my problem,” Skipper said in a statement.

Skipper has been with ESPN since 1997 and took the reins as president from Bodenheimer on Jan. 1, 2012.

Wow this announcement comes on the heels of the Fox/Disney deal where Disney is planning to take over Fox Sports Local affiliates into ESPN Local like Fox Sports West in Los Angeles.

It will be interesting to see who Disney will put in the ESPN leader seat.

you watch, he'll be outed for being person who did some sexual misconduct at ESPN. if it does happen, then get ready for this thread to be moved into the sexual misconduct in broadcasting section.

but for now, hope he gets the help he needs to kick the habit.
