John Steigerwald

I don't know if I should be shocked or surprised at all. John will do well, especially if he lands a job with FSN, who also employs his brother. I sure hope he isn't replaced with Paul Alexander, but I'd certainly support having Trenni Kusnierek on KDKA-TV.

I hope KDKA does hire Trenni. She knows her sports very well and seems to be very likable.

Tolo showed himself to be a buffoon and he won't be back. Besides, he's around 50 and they're not going to hire someone that old.

I think Alexander's candidacy is a figment of Smizik's imagination. Why would he go back to a place that fired him, especially the way local TV is going these days?

They'll hire whoever is the cheapest. They aren't running John out the door because he isn't doing the job or that nobody at the station likes him. They are running him out because the New York suits demand return on the dollar and thus more good talent gets shown the door. He's not the first nor the last that will be run out. At least they didn't try and shove the 50 percent pay cut down his throat and force him to resign. Maybe that's CBS thin way of saying thanks these days.

I have no doubt they will hire someone much younger and cheaper. But the new person will also have a better attitude. John's loathing of all sports other than the Penguins was a factor in this, too. People don't enjoy watching someone who appears to be so completely unhappy in their work. John's curmudgeon persona grew more extreme and was more of a negative to viewers.

While there might be some truth to that the bottom line is the bottom line at CBS these days and he's out because they have determined that his job is worth a great deal less than he's making. So much less that they know he'd tell them to stuff it. He was gone no matter what his Q numbers were.

He'll work less hours for less money at FSN at some point later in the year and like Stan people will tune in (or tune out) because they know what they are getting in advance.

Not to mention how much he loved Kordell Stewart. Plus, I'm sure the Pirates ownership is happy he's leaving too because of all the negative comments he's made over the years about staying away from Pirates games...not that Steigy had some good points about lack of salary cap and how its making our Bucs a minor league team.

The funny thing is his irrational stance on baseball actually gives the Pirates a free pass. They run one of the worst organizations in baseball, yet he excuses their incompetence because he thinks they have no chance to compete anyway.

I can't imagine what role FSP might have for him. He would be substantially older than anyone on their air (aside from Savran). His best hope is probably that the radio show catches on. Then maybe he can take it somewhere else after the man station fails.

Do you think Steigy is that much older than Paul Alexander? I wish Paul would pack up and go back to Altoona.

Paul looks terrible then for his age ;D Also, a couple of years ago Mr. Alexander was on the set of Nightly Sports Call with black eyes. I've always been curious what the heck happened to him.

I have Channel 19 on right now with Steigy, and he just put in a shameless plug for his radio show. He specifically said come October he'll be doing radio full time and part time tv. He mentioned he has one year left with KDKA. So, if he does radio full time, would they put him on earlier in the day, or wait to see if Dennis Miller show folds? (I personally like listening to Dennis Miller.)

His TV contract is up in October. He's spinning this as though this has all been planned. Channel 2 will use him occasionally as a freelancer after he's off staff, but the work won't be as regular as he seems to think it will be. They'll have a new staffer to replace him, and the station will have a vested interest in promoting that person.

I have no doubt he's hoping he gets more than one hour on the radio, but that's not guaranteed. It depends on how that format shakes out, or if it even survives.

He's stuck with the one hour time slot on radio right now. Dennis Miller will likely get some more time to find its legs (it isn't even close yet) despite the fact that the contract the show is broadcast under could be changed as early as the 15th of this month.
