John Sterling Gaffe Du Jour - Jeter's "5,000th Hit"

I woulda replied here, "Oh my goodness gracious," but someone there on YT beat me to it!

In April 1974, on the night where Hank Aaron set the lifetime home run record, a sportscaster at KPIX-TV in San Francisco reported, "Babe Ruth hit his 715th home run tonight...." ....later the person got fired, IIRC.

Could happen to anybody.... <shrug>

Maybe Sterling was looking into the future.

Well, even though I'm not a Yankee fan (nor do I live in NY), I'll take Jeter to own that hits record over Pete Rose any day.

The employment of "Daaaaaaaaaaaaaa Yankees Win!," "Oh My Goodness Gracious!," and "See Ya!" are probably the biggest collective joke in sports broadcasting I have ever seen. (Micheal Kay isn't bad per se, he's just generic with his HR calls.)

I know Steinbrenner was looking for unabashed homers to call the games, but seriously.

I don't understand why everyone likes to criticize Sterling. Boomer & Carton do it almost daily on WFAN, and I have read numerous posts on other boards. I really enjoy listening to Sterling. In fact, I usually mute the TV and listen to the radio broadcast during most Yankee games. (I know many other Yankee fans that do the same). So what, they guy made a mistake. He was caught up in the excitement of the event. It's nice being able to listen to a guy with personality. Many years ago Phil Rizzuto made tons of mistakes and veered off topic every night, and people loved him for it. I would much rather listen to a guy with personality than a bunch of robots spewing out pointless statistics all night, which is what most sports broadcasts have become.

"A" mistake? He averages 2 an inning. He puts his call, his banter ahead of the game. The best play by play announcers are the ones that paint the picture without smearing their own DNA all over it. Sterling isn't one of those.

My Wife and I both enjoy the Yankees games, and listening on the radio is part of it. We both happen to like "THAAAAA YANKEEEEESSS WIIINNNN!!!" and apparently, so do the people at the Stadium, since that call goes over the PA system after each win. ;)

If you want to hear lack-of-personality sportscasting, listen to the TV announcers for the Red Sox games. ZZZzzz... When the Yankees have a day off or are rained-out, but Boston is playing, we'll watch them (to root against them) and those announcers sound about as exciting as golf. ;D

Orsillo and Remy are low-key, but they're not boring. My big problem with the Sox telecasts is the nearly nightly commandeering of the booth by some Sox flack or sponsor or charity bigwig or corporate glad-hander plugging the team's latest attempt to cure cancer or wipe out prejudice or turn all the clouds over Boston into cotton candy. Some nights we lose two full innings to such blather.

Sterling is bombastic, but he gets to call the game uninterrupted. I like his shtick even though I'm not a Yankees fan; he's just the sort of announcer the richest, most successful franchise in the game ought to have.

You're clearly watching very little NESN (duh, you're a Yankees fan.) Remy and Orsillo do a fantastic job. They're knowledgeable, they have fun with each other, they have INCREDIBLE chemistry, they don't get in the way of the call of the game, they're not over-the-top, and they're not trying to get on a SportsCenter highlight reel.

If they weren't good, do you think a team with pockets like the Sox would keep them paired up and around for as long as they have?

as for announcers that are "homers," the fans love it! I think it's also important for the announcer to recognize when the opponent does something truly remarkable and to announce it with the same energy and enthusiasm.

As for John Sterling, meh. He does nothing for me.

He actually said it so convincingly that he didn't even go back to correct himself - all of the "DJ3K" hype for the past few weeks aside. And the funny thing is, the very next thing he says on the clip is a promotion for a "numbers" thing... LMAO!
