John Wetherbee Dies

"Big" John Wetherbee passed away yesterday.

I first heard John as midday host on the former Fox 97. He later did mornings on Peach 94.9 for a short time. He got his meteorology degree and joined Channel 46 news. He was then Operations Manager for Clear Channel/Savannah and later became Chief Meteorologist for WTOC-TV, which dominates the Savannah ratings.

John then started a weather service that gained over 100 affiliates. In recent years, he did forecasts for the Georgia News Network.

I first got to know John when I sat at his table at a Georgia Radio Hall of Fame induction dinner. And I had conversations with him at a couple of other events. He was a super nice guy.

I was shocked when I heard the news. I had heard him doing forecasts on the radio as recently as 2 weeks ago, and I'm told he did them until his last day. He was inducted into the GAB Hall of Fame within the past few weeks. Unbeknownst to me, he had cancer and was undergoing treatment.

Gosh, I really liked John Wetherbee. I also got to know him at the GaRHoF dinner and he was the nicest guy. I used to listen to him on the old Fox 97, and in my travels many years ago I was pleased to find him on-air at NBC/3 WRCB in Chattanooga. Always a reassuring presence on the air, whether on radio or TV.

I enjoyed him at 46 since oldies is not my radio format even now at 50. Im scanning the dial while traveling to SC and heard him on stations in East Georgia since no one in Atlanta used his service. It was just 3 weeks ago. I already miss his weather.

Always been a fan of JW. Never met the dude but he always sounded so kind. Bummer.

I actually met his daughter when we went to KSU together. And then I went on to work at a couple Athens stations that carried his weather forecasts.

I remember WDUN and FOXFM both carried his forecasts and when I went to Tennessee for a couple days his Forecasts were on 3-5 different stations in a 70-mile radius
He had a really good voice but with that said he is one the main reasons why I started in radio and weather.
Rest in Peace, John Wetherbee.
