John Winter WFLA-TV WFLA-AM

Wow, this is shocking news. I don't watch Channel 8 or listen to 970 that much in the morning, but I don't recall seeing him on TV or hearing him on the radio recently. You just never know what someone's mindset is. Tragic.

John had been working the night shift while Steve Jerve was on vacation and at the National Hurrricane
Conference. He was very accomodating to those of us on the radio side..and will be missed. Condolences to
his family, and coworkers at NewsChannel 8.

It's just a reminder that just under the surface of each and every one of us, no matter how happy-go-lucky we may seem to be, there is a demon lurking. It may manifest itself in addiction, depression, and other behaviour problems, but it is there. It's how we control that demon that counts.

John was a fine broadcaster who, unlike many in the business, didn't take himself too seriously. He was the perfect weathercaster for the early morning shift with his sense of humour and ability to lighten the mood for viewers to prepare for the day ahead. Also being a native of the Tampa Bay area, he cared deeply for the community. He will be deeply missed.

One other note: It was very good to see that for this evening's newscast NewsChannel 8 had a guest meterologist from their Media General sister station in South Carolina filling in so that the entire WFLA weather staff could attend John's rememberance service this afternoon. Real class.

Very sad. John was a very good man and will be missed.
