As I recall, Imus was just repeating what his producer had said seconds before, repeating it was stupid, but people do that in conversation all the time. Letterman means a lot more to CBS than Imus did to CBS and MSNBC so it was much easier to blow him out. Losing Letterman would be devastating for the eye network no matter what the rating are reporting from night to night these last weeks. Dave still has a lot of viewers and while Conan is good, he did get bested by Craig Ferguson at 12:30 so he's not bullet proof. There’s quite a bit of sampling that will take place before people make up their minds.
Demos are what matter. Conan has not been bested by Craig Ferguson or David Letterman 18-49. It makes good press to say David beat Conan in total viewers or total households but when it comes down to the dollars and cents, Conan has beaten David from day 1, that won't change and the advertisers will go with Conan.

I believe that has more to do with viewing habits than anything else. They've been watching NBC for years and it's a habit, but that can change if Conan doesn't build on these numbers. When a change like this happens there's a lot of sampling that can take place. Personally I don't think that Dave will take the lead as he's been around a while now at 11:30 and he's a love him or hate him type. But I don't always find Conan to be so great either. It will be interesting to see what happens when Leno returns in the fall. It could help Conan, or hurt him if those who always liked Leno decide to turn off NBC after Jay's show is over. There's going to be a lot of conflict with the bookers of all these shows as well. You'll have four talk shows in LA (five if you count Carson Daly) who'll need guests and you'll also get even more repetition when all these actors show up to promote their projects. It could really dilute the numbers, no matter what the demos are. Fragmentation could water all the numbers down. I wouldn’t count Dave out no matter how over the age line you find him to be. He’s still a major anchor for CBS and makes a hell of a lot of money for them. The real question is who might replace him when his newly signed contract ends
Conan is drawing younger viewers FROM Letterman. So, no, this does not have to do with habits, it has to do with a fading burned out semi-star known as David Letterman... http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118005122.html?categoryid=14&cs=1 Conan has BETTER 18-49 numbers than Leno did.

I certainly would count David out. Even Nightline is beating him 18-49. His time came and passed when Hugh Grant appeared on The Tonight Show...with Jay Leno.

You’re entitled to your opinion…

I do believe that this could and maybe should be Dave’s last contract extension, but I have different beliefs about his worth to CBS…

Numbers are not opinions. Conan is beating David by 177% 18-34. Even Jimmy Fallon is beating David 18-49 and he's on 1 hour later.

The fact that you are comparing shares of 2 different audience sizes (timeslots) proves you really don't understand ratings and how they are used and/or extrapolated.

For starters, so I don't confuse you, you can't "beat" someone who's not actually opposite you.

The “I certainly would count Dave out” opinion. Never doubted the numbers, but numbers are just that.
There are always other factors that I take in to account. I look at many aspects and I don’t always see it all so black and white as some do…

Considering David has been #2 or #3 in his time slot nationally for 15 years, even lower in Los Angeles, I stand by my statement. He can't even win when CBS is #1 in primetime and NBC is #4. He's OLD with unhip jokes which are getting older by the second...just like his audience.

Olive Garden pulls ads from David Letterman show http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0609/23889.html

“We apologize that Mr. Letterman’s mistake, which was not consistent with our standards and values, left you with a bad impression of Olive Garden,” wrote Sherri Bruen, the company’s guest relations manager.

Bruen said the company “screens network television programs whenever possible,” but explained that “telecasts, such as ‘The Late Show’ with David Letterman, are taped on a daily basis, preventing advertisers from reviewing the content prior to airing.”

I don't understand what the Olive Garden's contention would be in this case-the joke was less salty than their crap food.

Jokes are subjective. What’s unhip to some are not to others. Humor is different between cultures, races and nationalities. As an example, humor is different between the Brits and American’s, Australians etc. Calling him old isn’t entirely correct, he’s older, but there are people living who are 30 years older than he is and saying he’s unhip is merely your opinion, not a statement of fact. He’s over 60 now, that’s a fact, but who cares. Carson was older when he retired and he was still at the top of his game. We’re ALL getting older, you too. I don’t want to sling mud or make it personal but in most of your posts you come off as an age discriminator, I really feel sorry for you because when those around you start calling you old you’ll feel different. But since when is getting old something that’s bad? We all age, its part of the human condition and you can learn a lot from an older person. Old can be just as good as young. I dare say that your age makes you a lot smarter than you were 15 years ago. If being young makes you great then we’d be driving at ten and running countries at twenty. That would be disastrous. I could go on, but what’s the use you’ll just argue the point till you’re even older.

Ratings alone prove who is uphip, Letterman. His younger demos are fleeing (FACT) since Conan took over the Tonight Show. This is a United States english language program so we don't need to discuss about any other counties or ethnicities.

Letterman IS OLD and out of touch with the demos advertisers care about. Even Nightline is beating Letterman 18-49 http://tvbythenumbers.com/2009/06/1...-letterman-with-adults-18-49/21053#more-21053

Carson was OLD and his ratings were falling for many years especially with younger demos. He needed to go. He did not end on the top of his game (he also did not retire from the Tonight Show, he was forced out).

Hmm, pretty slim margins there Sport. I'm still not going to count him out. Like I said before, he's a major tent pole for CBS. Besides numbers can change and do all the time, and even then they don't tell the whole story.

The only change in numbers will be down.

It's not like you're going out on a limb here with that prediction, but life is full of surprises.
