JohnJay And Rich
CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KRQQ (93.7 KRQ)/TUCSON morning hosts JOHNJAY AND RICH expand their reach across ARIZONA, as their show will now also be heard on sister CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 KZZP (104.7 KISS-FM)/PHOENIX, effective JANUARY 9.

Dubbed "ARIZONA'S MORNING SHOW," the unique arrangement will feature JOHNJAY AND RICH working together live in both markets, physically splitting their time between the two cities. DEBBIE WAGNER, CLEAR CHANNEL TUCSON VP/Market Manager, said, “JOHNJAY AND RICH have grown to become the premiere morning show in TUCSON. Their dream has been to become ‘ARIZONA’s Morning Show’. This is a fantastic opportunity and we are delighted that it has come to fruition. Their show transcends demographic boundaries and that has led to their current dominance in this market. We are confident that PHOENIX will fall in love with this program.”

"This is simply the right concept, with the right talent, at the right time for our listeners, our stations and our state," said CLEAR CHANNEL PHOENIX VP/Market Manager JOE PUGLISE. "Compelling local content is what makes radio such a great communication medium, and JOHNJAY AND RICH have a track record of excellence in this department. We’re thrilled that listeners in both PHOENIX and TUCSON ‘win’ with this arrangement.” <P ID="signature">______________

Re: John, Jay And Rich

Why would they even want them? Just to save money? They can't even dominate mornings in Tucson.

Remember how well it worked when Tim and Willie did simultaneous mornings in Phoenix and Tucson?

I can't wait for the UA vs. ASU games and how J, J & R will discuss it.

Re: John, Jay And Rich

I am a fan, but I must reluctantly agree with the Puker. I listened to most of the JohnJay & Rich 6am hour Wednesday and the move to Phoenix was the only thing they talked about. WTF JJ&R?

I am trying to figure this out, Are they pulling a Kevin and Bean with John Jay in One Market and Rich in the other?

Re: John, Jay And Rich

I heard the promos this morning on Kiss Phoenix for the new morning show. I wonder if clear channel has ever thought of rebranding the tucson station to Kiss so both stations would be called Kiss FM.

Hopefully not. The 'KRQ' name has been around a long time and it has heritage.

If I'm understand the setup correctly, the show will be exactly the same on both stations, heard exactly at the same time, right? If so, does it mean that the same songs (however few there may be) will be played? There are songs that KRQ plays that Kiss would never touch, and vice-versa.

One reason I think this will be different than the Tim and Willie fiasco is that it sounds like they are going to simulcast their show into both markets real time. The mistake that CC made with both the T & W syndication and the Kid and Ruben syndication is that they ran the show a day behind in the smaller markets. These watered down versions of their show had next to no chance of working, mostly because you can pick up a lot of Phx stations in Tucson and you weren't fooling anybody into thinking the show was local and actually for them.

If you look at most successful syndications (i.e. Stern, Imus, Mancow) they do 1 show and pipe it into all markets same day.

Plus, JJ & R actually have a solidly run show for their target demos. From what it sounds like, this board has very few 18-34 females posting, so opinions stated here don't really hold much water.

Re: John, Jay And Rich

All I have to say bout the rebranding is they had no problem blowing up KZZP and naming it Kiss. Clear channel dosen't think about heritage, thinks about money! On the songs, I think they could choose songs played on both stations and I think on the rebranding approach when the morning team was introducing themselves they could basically say this is John Jay and Rich Arizonas morning show on Kiss FM. Just putting it out there

But, when KZZP became Kiss, the station was not performing well. The "heritage" associated with the KZZP name was an advantage from March '96 through April '99, when KZZP was a Modern AC (targetting the audience that listened to the station as a CHR in the 80's). Once Jacor/Clear Channel flipped KZZP from Modern AC to CHR (in April '99), I'd say that the heritage associated with the KZZP calls became useless, as the station began targetting the 1999 CHR listener...not the 1980's CHR listener.

On a related topic, Jacor's decision to debut Mix 96.9 in September 1998 was, in my opinion, one of the biggest blunders in Phoenix radio history. I remember KZZP being at the top of the ratings 12+ and 25-54 before Mix came along with a relatively similar format. Mix seemingly took audience from its own sister station, causing KZZP's ratings to drop...this led to KZZP's eventual ill-fated format change to CHR.

KRQ is a much stronger performer in Tucson than Kiss is in Phoenix, and it has been that way for a long time...and I think that the KRQ name has a lot to do with that. While a name change to Kiss-FM is not out of the question, I would still be surprised if it happened.

Ironic...?

I think this quote:

"Compelling local content is what makes radio such a great communication medium..."

is pretty ironic, considering they're going to take a show with local content, and homogenize it for two very different cities.

Re: John, Jay And Rich

I should add that Mix 96.9 has evolved into a fine Hot AC -- it's one of my favorite stations in the market. But, I can't help but wonder what would have happened if Jacor had left KZZP alone as a Modern AC, and had instead debuted a brand-new (KRQ-ish) CHR on 96.9.

Obviously ClearChannel should remember that this is a Rhythmic leaning CHR, herefore there are more Rhythmic listeners than Pop listeners. I don't think they will fall in love with the show. And no, KRQQ's sister is NOT KZZP.
