JohnJay and Rich playing more music

I have noticed latley that instead of just musical beds when they come back from commerical, we are getting full length songs. I wonder if they are giving a little "local" to each of their markets while the other markets get some extra music. Would make sense, anyways.. still enjoy the show and think it is time for some war of the roses or second date update in the five o clock drive time hour ;-)

Actually, I noticed the music is the same for all the affilates after I checked yes.com... either way, I don't like this show. It just sounds to dull for me.

They have been fairly vocal on air about the fact that they are being forced by management to play more music. I think the powers that be have decided that the public wants music with their morning radio. I started listening to them at the suggestion of a friend. The first couple weeks was painful, but my friend told me to give it time to grow on me. I kept asking myself "why the hell would someone want to listen to them just talk, and not ever play any music?!" But, like a fungus, they grew on me...as did the format of it being a talk show. They have mentioned several times that they're fan base is complaining constantly about the change. Guess we'll see how it goes.

It seems to me that we've been through this before. The "powers that be" decide that research (or PPM nowadays) tells them that the listeners want "more music in the morning," and so they muzzle the entertainers they hired to do those shows and launch "more music in the morning" promotions.

Then, inevitably, some creative and talented show comes along and hands the "more music in the morning" folks their behinds on a platter.

Of course it isn't inevitable anymore since the "powers that be" have managed to run off the sort of talent that could pull off a successful morning show without playing any music at all...

At face value, I thought I wanted more music...but once I got used to their format, I loved it. I agree that the superficial research may say "morning talk + top 40 music = success" but the fan base of this show is rebelling.

I find it mildly amusing that the DJ's are basically saying "FU" to the "powers that be" by complaining about it on air. I believe we have John Peak and the new markets to thank for the change.

It sounds like Beth and, well Beth, are playing more music in the morning as well on KEZ... PPM driven I guess? How has their show faired as a result of PPM?

Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

The Buckeye Boyz have noticed it as well. With PPM in most major markets now, it's shut up and play the music as that's what the listeners hearers really want.

hmmm it makes me wonder who wants to hear music music music. When you can have your own playlist on your ipod or whatever you have... wouldn't you turn to radio for personality driven radio? seems a little strange.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I tune in to hear tunes that are NOT in my library, and to hear something different from time to time. I don't have a huge library like some of you.

If you're looking for a deep playlist of music, I wouldn't be going to 104.7 KISS FM! ;D

It would be easier to take a look at the billboard charts and sample some songs on i tunes or amazon :)

Yes, that is soooo true! It's always great when that favorite song comes on the radio... you never know when that's going to be. The spontinuity (sp?) of it is great!

Oh... and songs always sound WAY better on the radio for some reason!

104.7 KISS FM keeps repeating "Tie Me Down" when I listen to their live stream... its annoying now...

I have another theory: it's the artists and record companies that want more music.

I've only heard bits and pieces of The Ryan Seacrest Show, but does anyone know if he plays as much music at JJ&R? I know JJ&R think they are competing with Seacrest and they have a "rivalry." I can't think of a good analogy but Seacrest is known worldwide and JJ&R are in 7 low-to-middle radio markets?

Anyway, the reason why I bring up Seacrest is you would think with his power he could talk for his entire show without playing any songs. I think its the artists and record companies saying 'if you want us/our stars to be on your program/radio station, you need to play our music more.' Especially when there is 5 morning drive hours that don't play songs. Howard Stern had the juice to seldomly play music and still get artists who wanted to do his show.

This is a nice theory, but it is more or less completely wrong.

As a programmer, I'd rather run a five minute interview with Lady Gaga than a three minute song by Lady Gaga.

Any idiot with an IPod can download the latest Lady Gaga song in a few seconds, but radio offers that idiot the opportunity to listen to Lady Gaga talk about her latest song...which is something they can't necessarily download.

I think that artists and record companies realize that they can sell their music across multiple platforms, but in order to sell their artists as interesting individuals they need to engage a medium like radio.

Ford,

As a programmer, of course I would love to have a 5 minute interview with an artist rather than playing a 3 minute song. I should have clarified my theory a little more: what about bits and just talking? JJ&R did a lot of both. I'm thinking the bosses said you need to cut back on the general stuff and play more music. That makes it easier to book guest.

Well, I am glad someone brought this topic up because although I don't really listen to radio during the week (other than 89.5 or 95.5 overnights), I did notice the music in the mornings on KZZP for quite some time now, but just didn't feel like coming to say anything about it. It will make me listen to KZZP more often because since I am a radio AND music fan, I hate going to sleep at night, knowing that if I should wake up to toss and turn a bit in the early morning I'd have to change the station if I want to hear some music until I fall back to sleep. That used to keep me from putting it on KZZP overnights for a few years. I'm glad that KZZP started doing music in the mornings, and I'm glad that KZON was successful in their ratings with their more music mornings. I assumed that if KZON maintained high(er) success while still doing more music mornings, then eventually other stations that weren't already doing this would be inspired to or get the idea to also start doing so.

I do have to say that as of right now, my top 2 mainstream stations on the top 40/rhythmic side are KZZP and KZON. Most people may not notice or be aware, but KKFR has changed within the past 3 to 4 weeks. I don't blame them for keeping it all extremely safe and predictable every single day of the week, but for people like me, I very easily and quickly get bored when specialty shows are changed up or removed, especially if the regular format isn't exciting enough without those specialty shows.

I can't really say much more since I only listen to radio on Friday and Saturday nights, so I may be missing out on quite a few things, but I will say that for me personally, Power's best days (in regards to the most recent times/past two years) in sound were spring 2009-January 2010. Now, I'm with KZON all the way. As a matter of fact, KZON (along with KZZP to some extent) seems to be getting better in some ways, with all this being due to the latest trends in the rhythmic / instrumental sound of top 40 & rhythmic music... . ..or maybe it's just now that I haven't been tuning into radio as much, things seem to sound fresher and newer the times I do tune in. I have to give KZON kudos for the dj's they are bringing over to the station. Hopefully they do get more airtime, and hopefully it will be rather sooner than later.

..I wont even act like I don't still listen to Power because in reality, I do, and still like many of the features in which they have to offer. Honestly, I'm thankful for all the rhythmics and top 40 sounds we have because they all do fulfill a unique purpose on the dial and bring more options to the Valley that wouldn't be available if they all didn't currently exist as they are now. While most would believe they are all similar, or even identical, I do notice that when you pay close attention they all deliver their own unique style and sound. The changes; I'm enjoying KZZP with more music in the morning, as well as KZON doing the most music in the morning. KKFR has changed over the past few weeks, like I mentioned before, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing, although in some ways I don't believe (personally) that it is currently as good as it was since last spring up to Jan 2009 (although what they are doing now musically may be safer, business-wise). Yes, I like the music options available on KZON and KZZP, but Friday's it will be all about KKFR in the mornings (if I'm awake) because they take things to another level all morning long.

The stations might not be perfect to my taste, but I'll be thankful for what I have until the day I board that British Airways flight and fly away. Until then, David Guetta and a few rhythmic pop/ electro r&b (and now, pop/rock) hits will be just fine with me. I'm just glad the current sound of hit music has changed from how it used to be 2005-2008.

Anyway, best of wishes to Johnjay & Rich with their show. Also, kudos to Skandalas, MJ, and most of all, Villin in the mix on KKFR. The KZON dj's...?? well, by now, most of you should already know my thoughts regarding them.
