Salem reports that Johnny Andrews is retiring after a 50+ year career in Radio, lastly as OpsMgr/GM in Omaha for Salem. Growing up, I remember Johnny Andrews splitting middays with Mrs Cunninghams #2 son, UncleJoe on 640 Hello Radio/Akron--Susquehanna Top40. Johnny was 9-noon and Joe was Noon-3. After Susquehanna sold out, and WHLO became first generation newstalk, I heard that Johnny and Joe moved to Columbus--either on WCOL or WMNI. Any memories in Columbus of Johnny and Joe??--David 5258

Here's the News Release:

OMAHA, Neb.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Salem Omaha announces the appointment of Greg Vogt as acting general manager for the Omaha cluster replacing retiring radio veteran and Salem General Manager Johnny Andrews. Effective Aug. 24, Vogt will assume responsibility for management of Salem’s News Talk 1420 AM KOTK, 660 AM KCRO Omaha’s Christian Talk, and KGBI 100.7 FM Safe for the Whole Family™.

“Johnny Andrews is a real broadcast professional cut from a cloth we don’t see often these days,” said Allen Power, vice president of operations for Salem Communications. “It has been my honor to work with him during the ‘crescendo’ of his storied fifty-year career. I am regularly amazed at the people I meet who worked with or for Johnny at one of his posts along the way. I have yet to find one who had anything other than accolades to share.”

As acting general manager, Vogt steps into Andrew’s sizeable shoes from his position as Salem Omaha general sales manager, a post he has held since Feb. 2005. He served previously as GSM for Salem Chicago and also for Susquehanna KCMO in Kansas City. Starting in 1993 he spent several years as a partner with an Omaha advertising agency before rejoining the radio industry in 2000.

Andrews and his wife will be retiring to the Tampa, Florida area. Reflecting on his years in radio, Andrews said, “It is time to ‘turn the mic off’ for the last time. It has been a wonderful and memorable fifty years. Only a loving God could have created such a journey.”

Joe Cunningham worked on both COL and MNI...middays on both I believe. I worked across the hall from him at MNI/WRMZ in the mid 80's. My absolute favoirte memory of Joe was one afternoon when the MNI transmitter went off the air and Joe didn't know it. He was monitoring off the program channel. We stood in the hall and watched him do his schtick...all the while, static was on the speakers. So, we waited for Joe to start backannouncing a song and we kicked open the studio door and started yelling at him...he just sat there with his mouth open. Nice man, wonderful jock.

i first remember listening to both johnny andrews and uncle joe when both were young jocks on whlo hello radio when i was even younger. this was before my voice had dropped when i was still dreaming of my first radio job and being a go fer at the local 500w daytimer. always found hlo's signoff unique because it went by california sunset due to 640 belonging to i believe kfi in la. i always thought those guys had a super sound and remember being thrilled to work with joe years later when he came to 'col. a total pro and 100% great person
