Johnny Cougar on KPLX

Was I dreaming or did I hear "Jack & Diane" by Johnny Cougar Melencamp on the Wolf over the weekend? If so, since when is this considered "country" and what other loosely defined "country" songs has the Wolf added?

Here's a sample for ya:

La Grange- ZZ Top
Tush- ZZ Top
Sharp Dressed Man- ZZ Top
Legs- ZZ Top
Gimmie All Your Lovin- ZZ Top
Hurts So Good- John Mellencamp
Cherry Bomb- John Mellencamp
Pink Houses- John Mellencamp
Turn The Page- Bob Seger
I Can Only Imagine- MercyMe
Can't You See- Marshall Tucker Band
Ramblin Man- The Allman Brothers
You'll Accompany Me- Bob Seger
Gimmie Three Steps- Lynyrd Skynyrd
I Can Make You Love Me- Bonnie Raitt
Amie- Pure Prairie League
Lyin Eyes- The Eagles
Hotel California- The Eagles
Take It To The Limit- The Eagles
Tequila Sunrise- The Eagles
Take It Easy- The Eagles
Pride & Joy- Stevie Ray Vaughn & Double Trouble

Shocking! Wow, I may have to actually set a preset button for them...first time I've set one for 99.5 since the earliest days of 1980, when they were still cranking out easy listening.

...And so, there's the rub...

Out of the closet comes the "'Nother Animal" lovers, giving that rabid pet a sedative and heartworm medicine, as they try to tell us that "he brings a fresh perspective to what Country music REALLY is".

It's about the spacious plains and southern sound. And now, a stop set featuring Taylor Hicks. Hit it, boys. ;D

John Sebastian, at his best. ::)

They've also added:

Behind Close Doors- Charlie Rich
The Most Beautiful Girl- Charlie Rich

They've also added:

Wonderful Tonight- Eric Clapton
Lay Down Sally- Eric Clapton

Charlie Rich is the most underrated performer of our generation.

I dunno if you're being facetious, but I truly miss the Silver Fox. One of the only reasons this non-country-boy used to listen to Sunny 95, so I could get an occasional Charlie Rich "fix"! And much the same reason we could sure use another "Memories" station here...someone who will play Charlie, The Carpenters, John Denver and others without apology.

...and The Jackson 5, Barry Manilow, The Osmonds, Tony Orlando / Dawn, Captain & Tennille, etc...

Ahhhh yes, all the artists consultants will tell us, "They don't test well". Anyone got any DE repellant? ;D

Consultants usually miss the power of the "Ahhhh" song...something that only needs a playing once a month that immediately jolts the listener into a time warp, or, as my little word says, to make them say, "Ahhhh." (I can't take credit for that...remember KVIL's "Ahhhh" songs" they would pepper in occasionally? Same idea.) For me, it doesn't take much...Burton Cummings' "Stand Tall," Engelbert's "After the Lovin'," Streisand's "Evergreen," Neil's "If You Know What I Mean," even Peter McCann's "Do You Wanna Make Love," etc. Maybe some of these haven't stood the test of time, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN NO ONE EVER WANTS TO HEAR THEM AGAIN!!! (Sorry for yelling.) I guarantee you that a lot of folks have peppered their iPODs with their own special "Ahhhh" songs. For me, all I ask of terrestrial radio is, play me something I don't hear all the time. This is where the 300-song playlist model fails...and keeps me faithfully paying for XM every month.

(And, as always, I'm not directing this at Robert...KEOM is truly an oasis in the desert for THIS 70s kid.)

And we've got 600 songs! :)

I remember seeing him at Six Flags years ago. He was stoned out of his gourd. Played 4 songs in a 60 minute performance and talked to his band the rest of the time

Charlie didn't have a great life from 1977 on. He was so stoned he tried to stab his wife with a Bic pen. He was locked up in a forced rehab. He never really recovered.

"Ahhh songs"....ahhh the memories!
When I was music director, I had to come up with three of them per day...and they'd have to be approved by Ron first...every day I'd leave him a memo with songs for his consideration...I still have all those memo's with his large green check mark or red "X" on them and the occasional handwritten note back on them that might have said something like "...what about Music Box Dancer?" or "Fever by Peggy Lee"...the REAL fun was trying to locate some of those lovely gems back in the day before TM libraries and internet downloads...usually a call to Bud Buschardt with "...Bud he wants it NOW, can I come by and pick it up..." Bud ALWAYS understood and complied...when Ron asked for it, you found a way to MAKE it happen.
Anyone else remember when we'd let listeners send in their three favorite "ahh" songs? If they heard their "Ahh" song they called in and won $50...not only a promotion, but listener input when we were tapped for ideas...
It was always a challenge to find something that would really spark Ron....Quinten's Theme from Dark Shadows is one that sticks out...Ron went ape when I put that in the memo...a two word exclamation that begins with "Holy" as I recall.
It actually became a game to see what he'd like or not...and as much as one would think he'd love something there was the occasional "I don't THINK so.." I'll have to pull out those memo's .. they are priceless...
I actually saved every single one of those in addition to every staff memo he put out during my time there and any he sent to me personally.
The scariest of all memo's was always the ones that said simply:
"S.E. see me please. R.C."
That would have you soul searching for thougths of every break you've done since you've seen him last...what did he not like....and every once in a while it was to say "...that break last wednesday at 2:15 a.m. was genuis..." yep, he very likely could be listening at any moment of the day - and most of us were convinced he was....or certainly were prepared for it....
you see, that's why "they can't afford to do it anymore"...who would commit themselves to that....
I do not know of a single soul.
