Johnny Hyde, one of Sacramento's most popular radio personalities in the 1960s and Program Director during KROY's dominant "Music Power" era, has passed away of cancer at his home near Placerville, in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Johnny began his career at age 15 in his hometown of Tucson and worked in El Paso, Phoenix, Bakersfield and Fresno, for Bill Drake at KYNO. It was there he realized he disagreed with Drake's philosophy and moved on, initially to KJOY in Stockton, which was a direct competitor to Drake-consulted KSTN, and then to KXOA in Sacramento. In 1967, he was lured across the street to KROY as morning man and PD. After taking KROY to the top, Johnny went to MOR KCRA-AM and began a transition to an innovative full-service news and music format. Hyde went on to consult and do voiceover work before his retirement in 2003. Johnny was 81.
