Johnny Magnus

I forgot to mention that Johnny still did his "Weather with a Beat" on KIQQ, and I should also say that Billy Pearl was a terrific Top-40 type DJ...wonder where he went...
Bill went from KKDJ to KIQQ in December of 1973, then to KHJ in September of 1974. He lasted a year. He and business partner Tom Greenleigh then consulted KRLA and actually beat KHJ in the winter '76-'77 book. Pearl and Greenleigh were hired to consult KIQQ after Drake and Chenault left in 1977, but couldn't repeat the success.

Bill got his JD, became a lawyer and talk host at KMPC (1981-82), and KABC (1982-84 and 1986-1991, when he co-hosted "Dueling Bills" with Bill Press---a point-counterpoint type show with Pearl as the conservative and Bill Press as the liberal).

Bill founded a local news website called LB Report, focusing on Long Beach, where he lived, but I believe he's sold that. He's in his early 70s, so he may be retired.

Actually, Bill continues to cover Long Beach aggressively, as he has done for two decades with LBReport.com. The site also includes content features from well-known LA media figures like Doug Krikorian and Dave Lopez.

Bill published last night a very personal story - David Pearl (LBCC Kinesiology Major) Joins His Dad, LBREPORT.com Publisher Bill Pearl (Battling Cancer) For Wild Yet Ethereal Experience Aboard Zero G Weightless Flight

I am so sorry to hear about Bill’s cancer. We corresponded for quite a few years back in the 90s. Great guy.

I’m so old, I remember when Magnus was with KGFJ, Los Angeles. “ The Urban League Civic Award Station”! Never missed his “ Weather with a beat”. It was like a magic carpet ride!

For those who didn’t hear, Bill lost his battle with cancer a few weeks ago:

Billy Pearl, RIP...you'll be missed...

Johnny Magnus - He truly is one of a kind! I too will always miss his "Weather with a Beat" from his KMPC days.

My taste in music was, in large part, influenced by "The host that loves you the most", the great Johnny Magnus. Being from Burbank, graduating from High School in 1960, he was an integral part of the music scene in LA. On albums where he wrote the liner notes (Carmen McRae-For Once in my Life), they were usually a terrific tribute to the album artist. I still have a few of those LP’s (in Excellent condition BTW).
May he live long and prosper.
