Johnny O - New WWWQ Afternoon Guy

John was my PD at Y-101 in Jackson my last year there. He's one of the nicest people I know and a great talent. He'll do well here. Plus, he owes me a beer. ;D

MC

I have to agree with MC. I met Johnny O when I was the PD at Rock 93.9. Very nice guy and fun to talk to about radio and music. His station always sounded great and he was very good on the air. I wish him the best in my hometown.

He looks like a young Dylan.

I was initially skeptical of this hire (jumping from market #120 to market #8) but in reading his bio still posted on the Y101 web site:

Johnny O apparently helped launch Y101 in 1996, but has also had a three year stint in Cincinnati (today market #29).

I think moves at both Q and Star both speak some subtle and maybe some not so subtle messages on age. After Tracey St. George left (who is still very hip sounding but came across to me as the most mature air talent at Q100 at the time) she was replaced by the younger Brittany. The new imaging at Star (replacing Brian James) sounds so much younger too. So imaging that a younger demo can relate to (with that phone EQ

Gone are the days when you want your CHR image voice to sound as old as your father. Oh for that matter that ABC voice whose name I don't know (the one who was on Y106.7/Eagle) ... "Tonight on the ABC movie of the week" .... was voicing Z100 into the 90s almost sounding as old as grandpa.

Moderator feel free to delete my post above, I had accidentally posted the above while still in edit, and timed out on the modification.

I think moves at both Q and Star both speak some subtle and maybe some not so subtle messages on age. Just some random thoughts. After Tracey St. George left (who is still very hip sounding but came across to me as the most mature air talent at Q100 at the time) she was replaced by the younger Brittany. The new imaging at Star (with Brian James gone) sounds so much younger too. Imaging that a younger demo can relate to (with that phone EQ side effect no less) instead of mega pipes with tons of reverb and effects. Gone are the days when you want your CHR image voice to sound as old as your father. For that matter that ABC voice whose name escapes me (the one who was on Y106.7/Eagle) ... The "Tonight on the ABC movie of the week" guy.... was voicing Z100 into the 90s almost sounding as old as grandpa. Heck in 2003 you had on Kiss 108 Boston Dale Dorman over 60 and still doing afternoons in CHR! But back to Q100, they launched with JoJo in afternoons, with tons of experience but who was maybe already a little older than the target demo in 2001, and still at least until very recently still doing weekends on Q (but if you listen to a 1989 Z100 aircheck of Jojo posted http://airchexx.com/ he doesn't sound much different now then in the 80s. Regardless, there seems to be a greater effort in CHR today by management in regards to age.

Ernie Anderson was the "ABC Movie Of The Week" guy... aka the guy who said, "The Luuuuvv Boat"... an amazing voice talent. He died in 1997 from... lung cancer (imagine that... a deep-throated announcer who smoked... I said sarcastically). Anderson's son, Paul Thomas Anderson, directs movies ("Boogie Nights", etc.)

I worked for a short time with Johnny O at The Radio People in Jackson in 2000. He was at Y-101, I was programming WJKK. Nice guy... really top-drawer talent. He'll do well in Atlanta.

I am really looking forward to hearing him. I have read nothing but good things about him. Also, I checked out his current radio home web page, and he looks like a really fun guy. There is a link for his my space page too. It looks to me like he may have had a personal tragedy in his life that might have been the big impetus for the move and a new start so to speak. Of course, this all may be just conjecture on my part.
