Johnny One Time - Brenda Lee

Today, with the weather so lousy here I decided to put in my new Apple Earbuds and listen to some great oldies on my Itunes. When I clicked on Johnny One Time I noticed that during the first few seconds of the song I could hear men's voices in the background. I clicked on another version and heard the same thing. It appears to be feedback from the control room when she was recording the song. I have listened to this tune hundreds of times since it was released and never heard that background talk until today.. Is it just my new earbuds or is this something that everyone has heard before but me.

Maybe it's you. I can't say for certain...but I don't hear any voices on Johnny One Time on MCA's 1991 Brenda Lee Anthology CD, nor do I hear them on the new digital copy of the song at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DKlwgtEJDeQ

Perhaps the voices are there and you just need a really good sound system to be able to hear them, the same way you need a good sound system to hear someone say "Shhh!" after a chair squeaks during the last chord of the Beatles' A Day In The Life.

The voices are there. I couldn't hear them on any version until I listen with earpods or regular ear phones. Try listening with one of these and let know if you can hear them then.

Voices or not, I'm surprised there was anyone out there but me who remembers this song. I rediscovered it in the late '80s on Dusty Rhoads' Sunday night oldies show he used to have on WLW. He was featuring country crossovers and now it's one of my favorites. I'll have to play it in my car which does have a good sound system to see if I can notice those voices.

If you revisit Brenda Lee you will be amazed at her body of work, beside her monster chart hits, other like "Johnny One Time", "Or Pen In hand", "Break it To Me Gently", " you can depend on Me"..those great Owen Bradley Productions....

And let's not forget about "Everybody Loves Me, But You", a great "B" side written by rockabilly icon Ronnie Self.

Ronnie self , now there's a name you don't hear anymore. Outside of Bop-A-lena, he didn't chart much , he was a great writer. my favorite by Ronnie Self is "I've Been there" don't know the year , but it's in my library. i need to add Bop-A-Lena.

Thanks to our generous small-town request line policy, Johnny One Time got frequent airplay at KTNM, my last fulltime employer. I never heard that chatter myself, but I know from experience that background talk did happen. Johnny Rivers' Secret Agent Man ended "cold". An instant after the song ended, applause, then a distant, though fading male voice, crying, "...Hey, do Batman Johnny!"

I wasn't the only one who heard this. But the Batman cry appearantly can no longer be heard on releases subsquent to the origional 45 RPM.

Sounds like you have another remaster of "Johnny One Time" from the session tapes with studio talk. :-\

One of my favorite studio "mistakes" is the stereo mix of The Rascals "Groovin'" on the "Ultimate Rascals" CD. If you listen closely (use headphones) you'll hear someone faintly tapping their foot in time.
