Spoken like a sixteen-year-old. People listen to radio for music, news, sports and in various combinations. The reason so many radio stations sound the same is that many lack unique personalities (IE local presense) Just because a Jock says "Altoona", it doesn't means he even knows how to get to a Curve game or that a AA team even exists nor much less cares. Maybe a return to some of the basics would help. Driving down costs can make for short term profitability but in the long run, gutting a station drives the market someplace else.
In my dream world, I would have a low frequency full power AM (like 620Khz) that covers the entire Johnstown/Altoona/State College market. I would program it to be heavy on local news/sports with older jocks who are originally from the area but are now more interested in good schools than picking up dates. It would be paired with a couple of FM's that saturate the market and would operate intandem with split AC formats. The sales force could sell the three together or in any combination.
