Jon Meterparel new Pawtucket play by play

He's sure to break the chain of Pawsox announcers who have gone on to bigger and better things. Somebody really screwed up this hire. Hopefully, he's one and done.

Was any mention made about the person (people?) who were doing the Paw-Sox broadcasts up until now?

I'm not willing to "hate" on Meter before he's even started. I say give him enough rope.....if he hangs himself....

If not...then he'll likely be part of the string of folks who've successfully gone from the Paw-Sox to other things.

To this very day....I STILL think the Red Sox made a mistake not to promote Gary Cohen (Paw-Sox, 1987 and 1988 seasons) to the "Big-Club"....and instead let him slip away to the NY Mets.

And yet he's supposed to be doing bostonheraldradio streaming in a month with Jen Royle--maybe he can do it from there or wherever team's playing (season only lasts so long, too)

So ... he "quit' a major market gig to "explore play by play opportunities" and after two years he's in Triple A?

What a lying sack of doody.

... you expected him to land in a major market first shot out of the gate? Everyone starts somewhere.

I really don't understand all of this pure hatred for Meterparel here. Hard-working guy following his gut. Yeah, he sounded like a tool sometimes, but he's got talent. I just don't understand it, and all I'm seeing here are personal insults.

I don't get it. You all sound bitter.

Agree with above.
Although he routinely sounded weasely on D&C by all accounts he was a hard working dude striving to better his position.
Also, regarding his 'leaving' just a reminder that he was likely pushed out by Entercom.

He's been fortunate. Socci was an unlikely pick --or so it seems-- to replace Gil. How much other influences go into who the Pawsox GM picks for its broadcast duo is hard to say?
At mid-season there wasn't the usual interest this job would have, I'm sure.

Gary was one of the best Play by play on the radio or now TV. (Coming from a Mets fan who grew up in RI, I am not trying to be bias). You can hear his love of the game (and Mets) in EVERY telecast!

Recently....while flipping my way through the AM dial...I happened upon a bit of Pawtucket Red Sox play-by-play.

Given how some of the folks out there dislike the guy with a passion....I was expecting the broadcast to sound awful.

I was disappointed. It wasn't awful. On the other hand, it wasn't wonderful either......It was just very very mediocre......Which leads me to feel that Mr. Meterparel is just a very average talent.

Which still leaves me yearning for Gary Cohen ;)

That's exactly what I'm talking about....love for the game of baseball itself along with the team writing your paycheck.

AND...it sounds very down to earth and genuine....not like some cartoon "homer" like the living fossil Ken Harrelson either.

I'd better stop right here....or I may be tempted to go on for a while about Mr. Harrelson. :D

Is he being paid by the team or the station??

In broadcasts of many minor-league baseball (and hockey) teams, the announcer(s) is(are) employed by the team and not by the flagship station.

In the "major league" level, there are a few announcers employed by teams (or regional cable sports networks partly or fully owned by teams), but I suspect most MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA play-by-play announcers are employed by the radio station, and/or TV station, and/or regional cable sports network that owns the rights.

I do wonder how his play-by-play style is transitioning to baseball. admittedly, I haven't listened to a game yet. But you simply can't keep the same upbeat cadence and intensity during a 3-hour baseball broadcast as you can during college football or basketball.

Sean Grande seems to have picked up on that quickly, even though he's on only occasionally. At first he was very intense and it was a jarring listen, now he's seemed to settle into the flow of a baseball broadcast more.
