Jon Rish is leaving WEEI

Apparently asked to take a paycut and instead chose to disembark.
Three of the top sales weasels are apparently walking as well.

Per BSMW:

**BREAKING**

BSMW has learned and confirmed that Jon Rish has given his notice and will be leaving the Red Sox broadcasts, and the radio business altogether. This is just the latest in a series of personnel changes at Entercom Boston under VP/GM Jeff Brown.

Mr. Drinkwater has made it clear that unless Ordway returns he was pulling out.

(Drinkwater still runs GG for the new owners)

Drinkwater by having Ordway as his guest at Fenway yesterday was sending a message. GG may well be EEI's biggest local account.

They had to cut costs, but this is cost of cutting costs... overpaid for Sox contract and now
they have to maximize ratings and ad dollars with that change in PM drive etc.

Note also one of the comments: exc in the dead of the summer, Dave O'Brien is busy with
ESPN work so diff. fill ins are needed --maybe the likes of D Arnold can step in.

Did I read GG was sold... but I guess he is still running it even under new owners..
(just looked up; yes. http://www.eagletribune.com/local/x1746074487/North-Andovers-Giant-Glass-sold-to-Ohio-company )

The savings of cutting Ordway have been wiped out by Giant Glass pulling out.

That's what I mean, indeed, by the costs of costcutting.

Newspaper business hit hard too; Cle Plain Dealer down to 3 days/wk home delivery while
NO Times Picayune is 3 days/wk, period. Would anyone be surprised if Herald or Globe
might do the same--and would could have thought despite getting $14.5M from CC,
Mindich would still have to shut down the Bos Phoenix?

I don't listen to the pre-game but doesn't Rish do a lot of the prep work? It's not like they can just hire a voice. With O'B gone frequently they really need two people at least on a part-time basis.
They should bring Trupiano out of retirement. John Rooke? Glenn?

Globe article said it would have been a 30 per cent reduction in salary had he stayed on. Now EEI has to find someone to put in place of the games he would have covered for O'Brien (on days O'Brien
working for ESPN)
From a comment to the above: "Rish was a workhorse for 'EEI doing fill-in work, rain delays and the like and they asked for a salary cut? Are they going to ask John Ryder to do the same?"

does mike Adams still work there?? I admit I don't listen to weei but when i do mostly for redsox games,All i hear is John Ryder. Not really sure why there is even a planet Mikey show as he barely works due to games from the Celtics and Redsox.

What Entercom is saving on getting rid of Rish is inverse to the damage to its brand.

Are they trying to make WEEI the radio equivalent of public access TV?

Rish is not much of a loss. Like Glen Geffner, he doesn't have the voice for a major market team. In addition, when interacting with callers, Rish tends to be very condescending - not so much in his words but more in his tone.

Rish is not much of a loss.
You're probably right but I think he did a competent job and didn't get in the way of things like some people I could mention.
He did BC hockey too at least until recently? They may need a PbP man.

Rish was a good utility guy. You could go to him for any job, and he would do a good job. He's no hall-of-famer, but he's a talented guy. How many of us ARE hall-of-famers? I don't blame him for taking off, these days you can make more in the remaining factories than you can on the radio. I'll miss him as a part of the sox landscape.

Good point about Joe Castiglione's voice. However, Joe is a Heritage voice in the market, and that gives him more of a pass than Rish. As much as Dale Arnold's voice is not top notch, at least he has more passion, experience, and knowledge of the Red Sox than nearly anyone else available to do play-by-play. Hopefully, they choose him.

Dale will turn it down until summer since he got Bruins to work. Dale's not very happy with EEI right now either and NESN is his top job.
