JON ROBBINS OUT AT ADVENTURE/SAVANNAH

Jon Robbins is out as OM at Adventure Radio in Savannah, probably due to the dismal performance for the past couple of years in the Arbitron world. Most of the stations were having their worst showing ever.

Any thoughts from the inside?

It is about time. He ruined the entire cluster in both HH and Savannah with his so called strategic ratings philosophy not to mention the moral inside both buildings. Now if only Mr. Halverson could exit maybe Adventure could get back some of the respect if once had before his arrival.

It's Morale not moral. Quit taking cheap shots at people behind your screen name.

For the record my parting with Triad/Adventure is amicable. I leave WGCO with it's biggest ratings in years. SC radio stations will always struggle with signal issues in Savannah, add in a tough economy and sales driven strategies...well you get the picture. As far as stations go, each PD is responsible for the ratings of their station, the OM is a resource but does not program all six stations. In SC, Country 106.9 is a consistent Top 3 performer in the money demo. Lex and Terry continue to rule the airwaves 18-49 for Rock and "post- JACK", Big 98.3 was at it's biggest 12+ number in recent memory and continues to grow, not only in GA but in SC as well. Kudos to Jerry at RHQ, the folks at CC and Cumulus, all professionals who put on good products for the listening audience.

Jon, good luck with any future endeavors. I have always thought Triad/Adventure should have focused on Hilton Head with their signals and let 98.3 be their Savannah station. It will be difficult for anyone to try and make those signals work in Savannah.

I couldn't disagree more. 106.1, 106.9 and 107.9 all throw solid, building-penetrating signals over Savannah. The idea to have these stations focus on a region whose economy is based on seasonal industries is crazy!

The problem isn't the signals, it's the product. This is a very easy fix. Move your best product to your best frequency (Rock to 106.9), and adjust from there.

Re-combine the HHI/BFT & Savannah markets into one market, thus raising the overall size of the market, thus allowing for an instant increase on the rate cards. Simple math.

Things I happen to know...
1) MORALE is definitely up in the 2 buildings. The staff had beeen feeling like they were treated like chattle for a long time.
2) 2 books ago, WGCO-FM- with 100,000 watts of power - finished dead last with A 25-54 in the SAV Arb. Behind 3 AM stations. Don't know how that is being on the "upswing".
3) In 2008 WFXH was voted "Best Alternative Station in America, Small Market" by R&R. I don't recall reading anything in the trades in a while about the station, positive or otherwise. I also know that in January of '09 the station was ranked #1 in HH, I don't believe it is anymore.....
3) There were are TON of good people who worked in those buildings who were either removed, worked to the bone, or simply got tired of working for people who acknowledged only negatives, and never gave praise for the positives.

Sure, I've got personal reasons for saying all this, but it doesn't make it any less true. Why we do radio is because we love it, because it's FUN to come to work and be around others like us, get to play tunes and interact with the masses. When those reasons are taken away and people DREAD coming to work because they don't know if they'll be ignored or pulled aside to be chastised for some random reason, it takes away from the love of what we do, from the productivity in the building, and makes people on edge. Glad to know that this holiday season the HARD WORKING and GOOD people at Adventure got a nice little stocking stuffer from "Santa".
Good luck with your future endeavors, Jon.

WGCO? Biggest ratings in years? I don't think so! Before the Jack flip they were a big player. Clearly much stronger than anything since going back to oldies.

Lex & Terry you had nothing to do with. They're syndicated. They happen to do well in this market.

WGCO had the biggest 12+ numbers in recent memory? How recent? And who cares about 12+?????

Perhaps the PD's are responsible for their own stations, BUT, you were the OM! That's like the sergeant letting the troops do as they please without supervision!

And let's be honest, Jon. Positive interaction with your subordinates is not one of your virtues.

Truer words have never been spoken. I've worked many places, and for many people. It was fairly stunning how you can rise to the position of OM with such poor people skills, open contempt of your subordinates, and the ability to go out of your way not ignore ANY positive that your staff does, but focus solely on either the 'need to improve' or pounce on any mistake that someone makes. Takes some skill...

a) Just like you to focus on a small spelling mistake and not the issue behind it.
b) Being that my screen name is so clever, do you need for me to spell out who I am?

Funny. I met Jon Robbins at Clear Channel in Charleston. NOBODY in that building had a bad thing to say about the guy when I was there.

Good luck to you Jon. Take a little time to regroup and you'll land solid.

Can anybody do a 5 yr or history cluster ratings overview in both HH and Savannah and include the orginal Oldies 98.3 ratings for comparison? Include all stations. Demos your choice? Money demos? How about a chronological order of changes of formats ,jocks, pds, consultants ecta from Mr Robbins.

tower guy needs to get his rope and play outside. radio history is for the decision challanged.

oh yeah, there's mediawatch and than there's cats like Jon Robbins that is media do.

What the hell are you talking about??? The scary thing is you could have corrected this jibberish!

Back on track guys. What is it going to take for Triad to wake up and find a strong team to lead these stations back into the light. David Benjamin is not an idiot but think he may have a few working for him. Triad stations did pretty well in this market and then started going south and never stopped.
