Jonathan Fritzen - VIP

OK, I see it's time for me to spam the board again and generate some discussion about NEW music. :D

I realize this CD has been out for a few months, but the deeper I get on it, the MORE and MORE I like it. This is the kind of "vibe" that is going to take this genre back to the promise land. Guys like Jonathan and Jay Soto (who guest appears), whose "Mesmerized" CD is every bit as deep and loaded with vibe, are the FUTURE of this genre and we need to get behind them and spin their tunes. Remember and respect the old (and spin their music if it is good and still sounds fresh), but embrace and support the new, both in the studio and at events. You don't need me to tell you guys this, but they need us now more than ever, gang!!!

Has the chops of a young Culbertson. I play both "In Your Eyes" and "Fading Away" with Michael Lington. They fit my Lounge tempo and texture.

Great idea to stick to the music and artists.

The resident know-it-all on this board knows nothing about this, and is typical of most so-called corporate "insiders" who think they know the business, but not the product.

Exactly why smooth jazz and radio in particular are failing.

Kutztown University Radio, a small Pennsylvania station that plays smooth jazz by day, and college variety at night, interviewed Fritzen a few months back. I heard the interview. KUR is still one of my favorite smooth jazz stations, even though it is just half time that they do the format. http://kur.kutztown.edu/ They just interviewed Slim Man this week.

This one didn't do much for me for the same reason the Oli Silk didn't. That kind of lite, noodly, piano playing just sounds, well, Lite, especially that little brush down one note to get to the next. There aren't many keyboard songs that have any momentum anymore. Culbertson live, yes, but he can get lite-noodly "tickling the ivories" sound in the studio. Culberton's "Playin' " and Karukas' "Wildwood" are strong..and you can go back to most of Joe Sample's Warner Bros stuff, my fave piano song is Jay Rowe's "End of Summer" - check it out if you haven't. Strong melody, killer hook and not a noodle to be found.
