Jonathan Steele Named KKSS-KKRG Albuquerque PD

https://news.****************/articles/n42155/Jonathan-Steele-Named-KKSS-KKRG-Albuquerque-PD

American General Media/Albuquerque hires Jonathan Steele as Program Director for Rhythmic KKSS-FM (Kiss 97.3) and Hot AC KKRG (Mix 105.1), effective Wednesday, June 1. Steele joins AGM from Beasley's WMGC (The Bounce) in Detroit where he served as Assistant PD and afternoon host. Prior stops include Program Director and air talent at WAMO in Pittsburgh and PD/air talent at WPIA in Peoria, IL.

"Jonathan has a real passion for creating great local, vibrant brands and will be a valuable leader on our staff. More than that, Jonathan is a wonderful person and will be a fantastic fit with our local team," said American General Media/Albuquerque Market Manager Scott Wiggins.

Albuquerque is very different from Detroit or Pittsburgh in that Rhythmic stations rely more on Hispanics than African Americans in the southwest. Could be a new challenge if he's not worked in Hispanic markets before. KKSS is well established and should keep doing great under any PD. Mix however often only gets under a third of the numbers KPEK gets overall so it's not a very effective competitor. AGM might be content with it if it makes decent revenue. But since they seem to want to pair 105.1 with KKSS there's probably not many new options to go with as Rhythmic and Pop formats may be at their market limit right now. 105.1 is a great signal with great coverage but decades of bad decisions by former owners have kept it from ever establishing a long-term format and audience (although La Jefa came close) which now seems to be a major factor for any sucess today.

If he's smart he'll turn KKRG around, better signal than KABQ(tired of iHeart throwback stations) and turn KKSS into the powerhouse that they once were.

For those of you who are from Colorado/Wyoming, I too had a mini-heart-attack, thinking he was moving one state to the south, until I read that it was a different Jonathan Steele. We get to keep ours though!

And now he's off to Phoenix: Jonathan Steele Moves To Power 98.3 As Program Director - RadioInsight

Steele comes to KKFR from Simmons Media Group Albuquerque where he has served as Program Director of Hip Hop “Kiss 97.3” KKSS and Hot AC “Mix 105.1” KKRG-FM since last May.

Simmons? Wow they seem to be off by about two decades!

KKSS did improve some over his short time there moving back into the 5s. Guess they now have to find another PD.
And when you're reporting on dozens of stations per day, sometimes that radio encyclopedia in your head defaults back a bit.. :)

Been revised...
