Jones Network's oldies format

Give me your critique ... quickly.

DJs, music, imaging, management, programming, etc.

Apparently, Jones is planning a "JACK"-like format soon.

But I am more interested in its oldies format which primarily emphasizes music from 1964-1969.

First...How much are you planning to use it?

Overnight only? Evening/overnight? A lot on weekends?
Or are you planning to use it 100%?

I ask this because I've worked where it was used 100% and while it was pleasing to the ear, it was very flat in MHO.

Please tell me you plan to have a live morning program at least Mon- Sat?

They had a fairly-good Sat Nite Oldies show and they fill for TOH newsbreaks.

But I recall some fade-outs from time to time when they were doing the "fills".

I definately love it. The music is exceptional compared to a lot of oldies stations these days. I love listening to Backseat Oldies with Gary Outlaw at night.

WBOG in Tomah, WI streams it at their website. www.oldies1460.com<P ID="signature">______________

A morning show is a necessity ... tell me more

Would you expand on your thoughts about the necessity for a morning show?

I agree.

Maybe you can make your points for me ... better than I can :).

Thanks.

I believe Jones has Ted "The Bear" Richards in mornings (formerly of CKLW). Great talent, but if you can swing a local morning show, it's good to do. If not, at least do local news/weather..traffic if applicable (not "an overturned cow on U.S. 42")

It's important, it's emphasized, it's not mandatory!

When I worked at Transtar, KIQQ (K100)was upstairs in our building & carried Format 41©. They did their own morning show with Jim Carson, and what I found somewhat strange is our affiliate kept to the same music rotation, song by song. It's always good to have a local sound in the morning & afternoon day parts if possible. I'll tell you what really bothers me Batman, now even the live music networks are voice tracking!

This is new? In the early 90s I worked at a station that was a mix of local & satellite programming...the satellite stuff was voicetracked even back then. I don't remember what service they used.

As far as following the syndicator's playlist even during local segments...it makes sense...you don't want to play a given song & have the satellite format play it again a half hour later (obviously this would apply toward the beginning or end of a local shift).

Re: It's important, it's emphasized, it's not mandatory!

I am not aware of any 24/7 Satellite Music provider that was automated or voice tracked in the early 90's. The first canned 'Network' I ever heard was MOYL in the late 90's. Not to say you're wrong though...

And you are absolutely correct. It just was strange having our Affiliate two floors above keeping to the exact play list. Some thought 'Format 41' was this kid tested, mother approved untouchable Bible of 'Lite' hits".

In my opinion, the best part of this format IS Ted "The Bear" Richards. Add local news, traffic etc to his show and it sounds outstanding. Go live on mid-days and or afternoons, if you can afford it. Follow the playlist, and you have a top notch oldies station.

Ted "The Bear" Richards is just to good to not have on.
