Launch scheduled for January '08. Saw ads in trades looking for OM/PD and AT.
This is not to be confused with MOYL, which is syndicated on the bird by Jones. This is going under the Jones banner.

Opinions, anyone?

Isn't it hard to form an opinion before the product is launched? I think it is interesting that Jones feels this is worth pursuing. I do too. I wish them well, but until we hear the product, there isn't much opinion to have.

How is it going to be distributed? You indicate that it is unlike MOYL which "on the bird."

I am confused ???,I thought Jones owned MOYL. Do they just syndicate the format, and if so who owns MOYL. Is the new standards
format going to be the same as MOYL or more of a "Timeless Classics" type format? By the way I know it has been said before
but I liked the Stardust format they used to have much better than the current one. I prefered it to MOYL.

From what I understand the Jones Network is ending it's distribution of MOYL in Jan. of 08 and MOYL is going with another distribution service, the reason for Jones starting the new service.

This is interesting...I was updating the Wiki for WHLI and found this tacked on the end of the "Music Of Your Life" wiki...is it true?

I don't know how people would feel about this. Certainly those who now have an affiliate wouldn't like it. But why not just move Music of Your Life to XM or Sirius? Because from what I hear neither has a good standards format. Sirius used to but now it's "Siriusly Sinatra".

Oh, and if they do this, Jim Croce and Carly Simon (classics, not her new stuff) need to go.

The format's affiliates will stay in play. The format launches on Saturday, Jan. 19th at midnight. It is very much a Timeless Classics format.

Karl Southcott (Chuck's son) is the new Operations Mgr. He started on Dec. 31st. He will be doing afternoons as Carl Hampton. Carl had been with MOYL as Operations Director for 12 years. He was most recently a news director for Entercom / Denver.

His dad ... Chuck ... long familiar to MOYL fans, KMPC and his own "Radio DeLuxe" format of Standards/MOR will be doing morning drive (5 hour shift.)

Jim Raposa will be doing a 5-hour mid-day shift. John Regan will do five hours at night. An all-nighter hasn't been selected as yet but will be by week's end, or early next.

Format clocks are identical to MOYL and stations are now updating liners as the only thing they need to change. Everything else, is the same.

The format is called "Standards."

Full playlists, and a demo, are available.

Oaktree, I am little confused about your post, do you mean that the current MOYL affiliates are switching to the new Jones standards format?
Or are they keeping MOYL format? If Jones is dropping MOYL is somebody else going to syndicate it or is it going to go away or end up on
XM or Sirius. Is Jones trying to get affiliates in cities that currently do not have a standards format? I'm sorry if my questions are a little
repetitive I am dealing with a real bad cold right now. I think the nyquil is kicking in ;D

Music of Your Life will continue on 100 plus stations through Clear Channel Satellite Starguide 111. Music of your Life is still the best standards delivered format in my opinion.

I don't want to get into speculation or conjecture here ... I can tell you that I spoke personally (and wrote) to Jones Radio in Denver regarding the "new" standards format, January 2.

One of the quotes from Phil Barry, VP/Programming of Jones, (stated in a memo to affiliates online,) notes that "The same receiver you now use for MOYL (Starguide III) will automatically switchover to Jones Standards effective at midnight Eastern Time Friday night the 18th, using exactly the same clocks you’re now utilizing." It would appear that the new format will occupy the same channel and need no reprogramming, meaning that MOYL is either being pushed elsewhere on another channel in a new distribution or taken off the satellite altogether, hence the reference to "broadband distribution" below.

Because of the well-known financial difficulties of the MOYL network, there wasn't much discussion about its future, in my conversation. An online source indicates that Jones is giving an "opt-out" for the current 100 or so affiliates who wish to stay with MOYL, but that the "distribution platform, such as to broadband," may be in the works after the switchover in two weeks. There is notice on this thread that MOYL will still be on satellite, but it won't be on the same channel as being occupied, as noted, by the new Jones "Standards" format ... so I don't know where MOYL will go, or if it will even stay on satellite. The formatics, as noted, will remain identical, with the music, personalities and liners changing.

There is no mention of impending change on the MOYL website at this moment, but this statement on another website sounds pretty ominous ... "However, in late 2007, after months of not being paid, Gary Owens, Wink Martindale, Chuck Southcott, and Johnny Magnus all quit and Jones Radio Network decided to drop the format at the end of the year and start their own Adult Standards format in 2008. The 100-plus stations that still carry "Music Of Your Life" have been given the option of staying with Jones or keeping "MOYL" in a new delivery platform such as broadband."

There is no comment from Jones on the fate of MOYL, other than that they won't be distributing it anymore ... and certainly not satcasting it on the channel used by Jones.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's curtains for the MOYL format.

Thanks oaktree, I agree with you it does not sound promising for MYOL. I did not realize they were in as much financial trouble
as they are.

All of radio is going through some troubling times but I can assure MOYL will NOT go away. Some good changes are on the way and yes they will still be satellite fed through CC and 128kbs stream on their website. It's all coming!

Distributed / syndicated by ... who? And 128k broadband stream from their website, especially for network affiliates, with be difficult -- with the inherent server delays from Internet provider to provider. I know ... my stream is 23 seconds between my location and the nearest market 27 miles away. It's almost 50 seconds to San Francisco. And it will vary coast-to-coast and it changes depending on net traffic.

Your friend, incidentally, has already signed to do mid-days for Jones new format not MOYL.

Also, Starguide II and III receivers are NOT owned by Clear Channel. They own 40 percent of the system. ABC Radio owns the remainder which they lease out to various clients, including Westwood One, Dial-Global and others, including Clear Channel.

The MOYL webstream has been taken down as of 12/31/07 ... with a message, as amlover noted, that a "higher quality radio stream will be available from our website by 1/20/08."

The "new" webstream will contain title/artist information.

No mention of any radio station distribution, just high quality webstream.

Yes MOYL will stream from the New website which will have a new look soon but stations staying with MOYL wll get the feed through the Starguide 111 platform uplink facilities in Centennial Colorado starting Jan. 11, 08 Broadband service will be available too. I know my friend Jim has gone with the Jones service and I wish him all the best. With everyone's passion for this great format I think there will be room for everybody. I sure hope so!

As we were saying...(from Tom Taylor)

“Jones Standards” launches this weekend.

Jones Radio Networks VP/GM Phil Barry has a great insight: “Our research clearly indicated that we cannot look at Jones Standards as some sort of modified soft AC.” That means not trying to blend the standards with rock-era soft AC. Also: “Personalities are extremely important.” He says the cut-and-dried “This is/That was” presentation isn’t what the potential audience wants. Phil says “we’re taking the approach that we’re playing ‘The greatest songs ever made’, and our presenters will be very knowledgeable.” They’ll bridge the American Songbook kinds of singers – Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett – with contemporary artists like Neil Diamond, Harry Connick, Jr. and Rod Stewart. The venturing of stylists like Rod Stewart, Linda Ronstadt and Carly Simon back into American pop classic scrapbooks is a real boon for formats like this – and audiences tend to be very grateful to have “their music” back on the radio. The trick is making the local station revenue happen with retail selling direct to advertisers. Agency buyers often don’t give this format enough credit, with much of its core audience beyond the golden 25-54 demo. Jones Media America will take care of ad sales and JRN will do affiliate sales for “Jones Standards.” JRN used to have a relationship with Music of Your Life, and now they’ve gone their separate ways.
