Jones Standards Ending Sept.30th.

It was announced today the Jones Standards just started last Jan. will end Sept. 30th. and will be merged with the Dial Global Standards. I heard the Dial Global standards really stink. This is VERY good news for MOYL and it's stations are growing with some of the Jones stations wanting to come back to MOYL. Music of Your Life is the best and always will be the best delivered Standards format.

Dial Global has its own thread, which you can find on the second or third page of this board, and you can read all the cdomments.

It was like what is now called "Timeless" from 2001 to 2006, but it has improved a lot since about the time Timeless became like the old Memories, which was REALLY bad. What is bad about Dial Global is that the AC stuff left over from the bad years has never been dumped, though I like a lot of it, mostly that which has become a part of standards because it just has to evolve. But the real standards, both old and new, are so good. No big band, and they're working on early 50s stuff, but if you listened to Timeless and not MOYL durin g 2006, you'd really be surprised.

Bill Jones or whoever was substituting said"Here's Billy Joel. Don't ask me why." I won't. I already know we mcan't get rid of people like him. It's okay. I don't care that much for him, but he is part of standards.

"Don't Ask Me Why" is actually one of my favorite Billy Joel songs, though I admit it's sort of jarring to hear it on "Adult Standards." The instrumental break about three-quarters of the way through the song is sort of 20s-sounding though.

On yes.com music logs for some Dial Global stations I have seen "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John listed. Are they REALLY playing that one? If they are, shame on them, as it sticks out like a sore thumb. I love Olivia, but "Physical" definitely does NOT fit the standards format. I have noticed songs like "The Song From Moulin Rouge," "Let Me Go Lover," "Some Enchanted Evening" and "Sincerely" (McGuire Sisters) being re-added to the Dial Global playlist, which makes the more questionable songs in their rotation stand out even more.

Speaking of Dial Global, didn't they also purchase Waitt Radio Networks? Does this mean Waitt's "Lounge" format will also be going bye-bye? I hope not; I like it.

Yeah, the piano solo on "Don't Ask Me Why" fits perfectly on standards. I hope those older songs are back in the format (I know "Some Enchanted Everning" is) but "Physical" has no business whatsoever in the format. I know my affiliate plays junk like that and worse, but that's when they're local.

Of course, I wouldn't be at all surprised if "Physical" was a part of Useless Classics. My affiliate (which is now oldies, which is what the morning show was headed toward anyway) played it. They played a lot of pure junk in the mornings.

By the way, if we're going to post about Dial Global, there's a thread for that.

I'm relatively happy with Dial Global. Over the weekend they were really sounding good. A lot of AC junk this morning, though, but plenty of real standards too, and of course the middle-of-the-road stuff that seems to be the main purpose of the format now.

But some of what I liked on AC radio as a teenager I can still enjoy now. If they don't overdo it I'm happy.

I wrote Sirius and said they should do the Jones format since they don't do a real standards format anyway. I don't know what Siriusly Sinatra is but I suppose it's possible to even overdo Him.

As we've mentioned before in various forums - there is nothing wrong with Siriusly Sinatra Channel 75 that NOT playing Frank every other song wouldn't fix. The problem in listening (or trying to) is you'll hear a good (say) Peggy Lee song and maybe a Nat Cole and you know that the next song or two will be from the Sinatra catalogue. I like Sinatra - I really do, but I'd much rather listen to him mixed in normal amounts - once an hour or two. If you want to billboard that you are playing a block of Francis Albert, do it...but don't him all the time. I'm sure that Nancy and the family is happy with the amount of spins they recieve and the royalities they hit Sirius up for...but damn!
