First of all I don't really believe people reading this board are big fans of either the Lite or Coast morning shows since most insiders and active radio followers scorn the Ken and Barbie type pairings on morning ac stations.I swear even some members of these shows wouldn't be caught dead listening to them but they seem to be the long running trend for this format.I won't include Giovanni and Kim in this topic although chr or not they could almost be included,but since Jones and Joan were once paired together what do you think about the morning competition between these 2 stations?
Gary DeGraide has always been one of those smiley-face morning people with a minimum of sarcasm if any at all.He's very pc and protects his image.David Jones,while a good choice for that show,isn't the same type personality.He's more straight-faced and really a different type of personality.Both he and Gary came from top 40 in Providence but Gary made more of a full-fledged turn to smiling ac while Jones'personality never became all that sunshiney for lack of a better word.
Joan hasn't changed her Mommy schtick but I've heard people tell me they like her but not the show itself.This may have to do with the other players.For years I've felt the best morning team on Coast would be Joan and Chuck then just play up the married couple act to the hilt,especially since Chuck is probably the best person on that show.
Will there be any change at all for the potential morning audience for either show?The music really has become quite different for both stations.Hot ac and straight ac are different anyway but Coast's no-rules approach has resulted in a lot of music Lite wouldn't touch.
My opinion is that no one will flock to Lite because Jones is there and Lite listeners won't defect to Coast either.If money weren't the issue the ideal scenario would be for Citadel to hire Joan and pair her with Jones on a show where she's a better fit but we all know that won't happen.
