Joplin radio

Let me first offer my condolences and prayers to everyone who lost family, friends, homes and/or livelihoods, in last Sunday's terrible disaster. I do have a few questions about the status of Joplin radio, though:

1. Any stations still off the air?

2. What was the coverage like during and after the tornado (wall-to-wall coverage, etc.)?

3. TV coverage: are the TV stations still doing wall-to-wall coverage or have they tried to resume some sort of normal programming?

Hope you guys can recover quickly.

(1) I don't believe any stations are off-air. It's possible KZRG 1310 still is, but my understanding was that the station went off-air due to a power failure at the transmitter site rather than structural damage caused by the tornado. Most of the stations' towers and studios are on the west side of town and were a mile or two from where the tornado touched down. The Zimmer stations moved from 13th and Monroe to 32nd and Range Line not too long ago, and they were just south of where the tornado hit.

(2) Here's what KODE/KSNF did during the tornado: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfE6wGceA_A (copy and paste it if the link doesn't display correctly; Google Chrome has never rendered the "Preview" button on this site correctly). I'm not sure what KOAM/KFJX did. They've always been heavily Pittsburg, but Cherokee County, which includes Baxter Springs and Galena, KS was under tornado warning along with Jasper and Newton when the damaging storm hit. The voices you hear on that tape, by the way, are Gary Bandy and Caitlin McArdle. Gary Bandy has been in Joplin for at least 25 years and was the PD of KKUZ "Z-103" in the 80's and went into weather in the early 90's. He and I visited about our radio backgrounds at the open house at the KODE/KSNF studio last July.

(3) I'm not sure what the coverage has been since. I live about 3 hours from Joplin and can't get their local TV stations like I could when I only lived 45 minutes to an hour away.

all I care most of the people that are still alive stay heathy take care of your self and the ones that died we should pray for them and hope they go to heaven take your time with the power too and good luck building everything back to the way it was

I drove through Joplin this weekend to visit family. I can confirm all stations in the area are on-the-air. The Zimmer stations continue to broadcast disaster relief info. All were in simulcast mode as of about 1:45 this afternoon. As many times as working for Zimmer frustrated me, I can honestly say I'm proud of my service with the company, even if it only lasted 9 months.

the reason I said take it easy I don't want too see people get more hurt more but that I understand why they have to get electricity and power lines now 92.5 is back on line I not sure about the rest good luck with them Just don't get hurt

now as I look back at the eagle wisconsin about twenty miles were which is waukesha wisconsin they had a tornado touch last no one die and when I look back on joplin a lot of people were dead I'll bet it's better too have ellectricity and power going because so no more people I don't blame joplin if they got there electricity up fast and running because it's sucks with out electricity so it good when it's running instead of darkness I don't blame you guys if you want the radio and tv stations to work much I would too

By the way, I've been reluctant to post these publicly, especially here, but, if you want to see my videos of Joplin a week after the tornado hit, I have them on YouTube. I've been worried about gawkers, but, after several of my friends viewed them, they agreed my take was more powerful than anything you've seen on the news since I know Joplin and where a lot of these landmarks used to be. After all, it's important that everyone know what a tornado can do, and I can remember getting calls from irate listeners because I was interrupting their music to cover a tornado that was nowhere near them. This is why we do what we do in broadcasting:

Northbound Range Line from I-44 to about 20th Street: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFu5cBqmefs
Smaller view of the same footage (second pass up Range Line): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aAcT0l1E1E8
32nd Street near the Flying J: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3M5EaT-fDCw
Northbound on Main St starting at about 32nd (I dropped my phone during part of this trip): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pesvbwRH9PM
Southbound Range Line: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30m4l4eZXvY

Never underestimate the communicative power of proper punctuation and capitalization.

I believe Jeffrey has some sort of disability (at least I was told by another poster and Jeff can confirm this for himself if he wants to), so if that is the case, please lighten up on him.
