Josh Lewin's Replacement

The_X_Man_Cometh said:
Who comes to mind from radio to replace Josh Lewin on the Rangers tv broadcasts in 2011?

Maybe Dave Barnett? Isn't he Eric Nadel's right-hand man on Ranger games on the radio?

If that is the case and I have to think it is, how is that better than having Josh? It seems odd to me that with the Rangers in the play offs and much excitement around the team they would want to downgrade the TV coverage of the team in 2011. Is it a Fox call or Nolan's call?

I think the broadcasters are hired by the team. Having said that, I don't think Dave Barnett has worked for either the radio or TV broadcasts - just not enough energy.

From reading Lewin's blog over on Lone Star Ball, it seems as though it was a mutual decision, but not a pleasant one. However, Lewin also said he had something in the works that he couldn't comment on (Joe Buck's job, anyone?), and would be remaining in the area.

Wouldn't it be cool if someone like Ralph Strangis could be found to do Rangers games? Or the ghost of Mark Holtz ("Hello, win column!"). Frankly I don't think you could find anyone locally who would do as good a job as Lewin (I've heard Craig Way's name mentioned, but can't see it happening).

And please, no Steve Busby. We had enough of him during the '80s. He's just barely bearable on the Rangers Live telecasts he's done. Pairing him with TAG is a sure-fire way to increase Mute button usage.

This has Nolan Ryan's thumbprints all over it. And I agree with the decision to move him. Josh reminds me of the result of giving my chirpy younger brother a little too much coffee, all day long, then parking him in front of a computer, distracting him from the work at hand.

He's a very likeable guy, and I'm sure he would make a great next door neighbor. But the Internet surfing (and the requisite comments about his surfing) during games is just.....odd.

Just one person's opinion, but the many, many times where Josh would utter something banal, then comment on how really banal his banalities are, and and then comment on his comments on his banalities was just painful.

Josh is what you get when you decide to go with style over substance. He has a great set of pipes, and can get really excited. But the actual substance (and his knowledge of baseball) is a lot thinner than it should be after nine years in Dallas-Fort Worth.

I like Dave Barnett. It does seem, however, that Eric's style and Dave's style are a study in contrasts, which I like. Dave and Tom Grieve would be pretty low key.

I'd like for the Rangers to consider the guy who went to the Phillies from KRLD.

Please. Josh has made the TV broadcasts worth watching. Grieve, a man who presided over a horrible era in Rangers history (including the steroid era) should not be in the booth commenting on this team. He was a marginal player and a very marginal GM.
This is a brother-in-law deal by Ryan and I think Grieve pushed for it. He purposely laid out on Lewin, and it was noticeable. Unprofessional in my opinion. Lewin brought life to the broadcast. Some may complain about his pop culture references, but I think thought they were great. And I'm 42. They were much better than Grieve thanking every little attention-seeking grandmother, who sent cookies. Good gosh that's annoying.
This was a bad move for Ryan.

Lewin is awful. The guy has a lisp, and for his entire career decided to do nothing about it. How about a new announcer whoe doesn't sound like Sylvester the Cat!

As much I as like Josh on TV,(BTW Josh does very well on radio), this maybe comes down to last year when the Rangers made a semi big deal about his Chargers Radio gig. They did not like it anymore. I don't have an idea who they will get to replace him, but I know this will be his only play by play gig.

A lisp? Not sure what broadcast you have been watching but it obviously isn't the Rangers. I have talked to Josh in person on several occassions and the guy does not have a lisp.

Bad move on the part of the Rangers. Lewin has been the best tv announcer the Rangers have ever had short of Mark Holtz. He has made the games much more watchable. Way better than the guys broadcasting the playoff games on TBS.

Mike Capps (former ch. 8 reporter and for the last several years a minor league (austin) and national fill-in play by play (fox & espn) guy is the lead candidate imho.

If Capps has any ties at all to Ryan and/or Round Rock, he's probably a shoo-in for the job. He's also a recognizable name around these parts. He might be the only legitimate candidate out there (no offense to Steve Busby or Dave Barnett, but they're just not play-by-play material IMNSHO).

Don Orsillo (p-b-p for the Rangers-Rays series) sounds like Scott Murray... not that there's anything wrong with that!

Any? He has been the radio p-b-p announcer for the RR Express for the last several years.

He has the ties. He's currently the play-by-play guy for Round Rock.

HUGE Josh Lewin fan here! I have to credit his quirky personality for drawing me back in to watching that lackluster baseball team...yes, I know, this season aside...

I hate to see Josh Lewin go, he was a perfect contrast to the excellent Tom Grieve. I would love to see an Eric Nadel/Tom Grieve pairing, but that is not going to happen.
