josh out at krth

Sure sounding natural is great. But what....Wolfman Jack...Real Don Steele, Charlie Tuna,
Lee Babi Simms, did they sound natural?. Hardly. The laid back phoney deliveries which
were the rage in AOR's heyday are largely laughable today. Now once in awhile a great
"natural sounding" jock surfaces. Jimmy Rabbitt was the best at this, but I've never heard
anyone before or after him who could pull that off. Jed The Fish is another in a weird kind
of way. Listen to KFRC today-nobody sounds real-all fake and forced. There Lew...(professional
radio fan) you had your fix. Can you let us who really do the work chat?

There is a difference between having an overly affected sound and a entertaining style. Triple A jocks usually employ this effected natural delivery which pretty much sucks.

Uh...sorry I ticked you off, TV. Am I preventing you pros from chatting? I was merely responding to a previous post, and talking about a couple of jocks who worked with what you call an "over-affected" sound. That didn't mean I was entirely buying into the concept. I grew up with Steele and Tuna on the radio and loved their delivery. I think Shotgun Tom Kelly is fun to listen to, and you certainly couldn't call his style natural.

TUNA is sounding 'super' this morning --

I wouldn't be surprised if he DID go into their weekday lineup...

By the way, that IS Charlie's normal delivery.

Charlie is one of THE most prepared jocks on the air today...a pro all the way and he still has a passion for radio. As far as full time? There's nowhere to put him! With only FOUR fulltime jocks (all nights tracked)...there aren't any openings! Nada....zero....zilch!

Only four full-timers. It's hard to believe that this is radio is today. Now I'm hearing that companies are thinking of laying off sales people.

But you know, the CC stations are even worse off. Most of them are down to 2 or 3 full-timers.

Tuna sounds SO GREAT whatever he's doing. Talk about a pro - Bruce said it: he's prepped EVERY TIME the mic is open. Frankly, until he came to KRTH, I'd forgotten that weekend radio could actually be entertaining (sted of just background filler).

Frankly, I think KRTH is the best-sounding station in LA at the moment. Everyone is perfect for what they do. Even little Sylvia on the weekends is coming along nicely. And Bruce: after all these years, I am still in awe every time I hear you.

BTW, remember in the late 70s when stations were making a big deal about 24-hour music with live jocks? Weird to see it go the other way again, even in big markets.

(OK, I'm done lapping at the Kool-Aid now ::) )

You may be correct as KRTH is sounding pretty darn good right now, and at the risk of sounding mean, all that was needed was to remove Escondon as he just didn't fit in my opinion. There are other good sounding stations, but in some cases they've been handicapped by the dumb moves their management has made as is the case with the Clear Channel stations. What was done to KOST was unthinkable, but CC thought of it. KFI is still probably one of the better sounding talk stations in America and there are other examples.

I think Tuna sounds better at KRTH than he did at KBIG simply because he really seems to be in his element. It's like a home coming for one of LA's last remaining Boss Jocks joining Jim Carson and Shotgun Tom who can also claim a Boss heritage.

As for your comment about "Live" 24/7, well yeah it sure is sad to have gone the other way especially when you consider that this is a city that doesn't sleep. It's giving short shrift to the people who live and work at night.

DR WU....you are too kind! Thank you for your nice words! I just happen to still love radio after 38 years at it. I fell in love, way in love with it when I was 13 and realize that anyone who has the most incredible privilege of talking into a microphone and being heard in a market the size of Los Angeles, owes it to anyone listening in to give their best, to entertain, to inform, to make people feel good simply by sounding like you love what you're doing, you are excited by what you're presenting, and, that you're a real person who is communicating and living right along with whatever it is they're doing. I've had the extreme privilege of working at two radio stations that I grew up with in the Inland Empire (K/men and KFXM) with a station that was so much a part of Orange County, KEZY 1190 (in the mid 70's)...a station that made a good name for itself in LA in the mid to late 70's and early 80's (K-100) and, most of all, K-Earth! I will always miss my morning partner at K-100 (Tony St. James). We had so much fun in the late 70's and the first part of the 80's. I shall never forget. Anyway...thank you, DR WU!!! I love every minute of being "on the air"...and still believe in radio as the MOST personal medium. I do hope HD Radio catches on...it SHOULD....
