Journal buys WTVF/Nashville

I wonder what happens with Landmark's other station, KLAS in Las Vegas? Journal can't buy that station, because they already own KTNV, the ABC affilaite there; I'm pretty certain that KLAS and KTNV are among the top-four rated stations in the market.

You're right that Journal can't buy KLAS under the current FCC rules, since it's a top 4 rated station, & the CBS & ABC affiliates cover the entire market. If KLAS were with a top 4 network, but the station only served a portion of the market, while another company owned the other station that affiliated with the same network, then that would be the only exception to the rule. LIN Broadcasting is able to own NBC affiliate WOOD-TV & ABC affiliate WOTV, because WOTV only covers the southern part of the Grand Rapids market, while Gannett owns the other ABC affiliate WZZM, which covers the northern part of the Grand Rapids market.

KLAS has been on the market for some time. It's a good news station, and an expensive main anchor just announced his retirement.

Landmark had a deal to sell both KLAS and WTVF a few years ago, but it happened right as the economic collapse hit, and the deal cratered.

Unless either Meredith or Sinclair sells off one of its existing stations in the Las Vegas market, we could across them off the list. If I remember right, in Sinclair's most recent transactions, they have the right to sell-off their Vegas duopoly (KVMY/KVCW) to Fox by 2014; if that transaction does become reality, the TV landscape there becomes very interesting, not just by an ownership standpoint, but also even by a network affiliation standpoint.

Las Vegas was one of those cities hard-hit by the economic crisis, and it lost nearly 19,000 TV homes from last TV season. That said, it's still a pretty attractive market, almost like Miami as to CBS and NBC in the late 80s/early 90s. I know CBS owns radio stations in Vegas, and KLAS is a heritage CBS affiliate (first station in Nevada, and CBS has been there since day one [1953])...they've been in downsizing mode in recent years, but it wouldn't surprise if the Eye emergizes as a potential bidder for KLAS.

And each city has its own version of (removes sunglasses) "CSI". (The Who sound drop)
