If you look at the ratings, you don't have to ask that question.

Actually, I believe there will be a couple of changes, because WQBB-AM loses Fox Sports Radio next week.

I always figured since most oldies stations are switching to Jack, that 95.7/106.7 would do so also. Actually, someone posted a while back that South Central already had everything set up to switch to Jack this month. They probably mis-understood the information or something. I don't really keep up with the numbers anymore, but my guess is The Point. Am I right? What prizes to I win? (joking.) Anyway, if a Journal station flips to Jack, what do you all guess South Central will do about Oldies? I doubt thier numbers will ever rebound.

I had been anxious to hear the Jack format and finally got a chance too not long ago while on vacation. I wasn't a bit impressed. It sounds like a big mess. You just don't play J-Lo, KC & The Sunshine Band, Foreigner, and MC Hammer in the same set of music. That's just sick. I read, also, that the markets that introduced Jack first - were the format has been around for the longest - the once big ratings have died down faster than vintage 80's era Motley Crue style big hair in the middle of a rain storm. This must just be a novelty format. I don't expect it to last very long. Probably a decade at the most.

A station hanging around a decade is pretty decent in this day and age.
I'd guess JACK's licensed to SCC for Knoxville. Things are rocking
along for Jack in Nashville. What do you think will happen to the
River now that it's on a tough signal?

YOU'VE BEEN HAD..NO FORMAT CHANGE

Jesus, you people like to talk worse than 12 year old girls...........

Well, I don't expect much growth for The River now. And since Phil Williams is leaving The River, that can't help it much either. I'd say it will begin to dry up now. Plus their expanded playlist has caused the other stations like WIMZ, Oldies, and B-97 to increase their playlists too and add more variety. The station probably won't go anywhere though. There's not much left for that station to possibly think about doing, it's all being done already by someone else.

I can't speak about Jack in most other markets, but to my knowledge, Jack-FM in Nashville has never played J-Lo or MC Hammer. As afar as not being impressed with the Jack format, I was the same way the first time I heard Jack. I was in Denver in December for business and pleasure and heard Jack in Denver. I also thought it was a big mess. When I went back to Denver in February, I listened to Jack then and it didn't sound like such a big mess then. It is a format that grows on you. I have several friends that used to work in radio and both have stated being former radio personalities, they should hate Jack, which they both did when Jack first came to Nashville, but both are now big fans of Jack. Trust me, you may hate the format at first, but it is now the station I tune in to first to see what they are playing.

You seem to be of the mindset that with Phil Williams leaving the River that the River will cease flowing because of it. I have to disagree. A majority of the listeners to the River listen because of the music, not because of who's on or not on the air. There are some people who will listen to a certain station based on the air personalities but still a majority still listen because of the music reguardless of who's on the air. And just because a certain disc jockey (I know I'm showing my age)has a following on one station doesn't always mean they following him to a new station. Remember when CP and Walker were the top morning duo in Knoxville on WRJZ? WRJZ switched formats from Top 40 to country and then CP & Walker took their morning show to the new WHIG 850 AM (formerly WIVK-AM). Problem was they didn't take their audience with them and ratings were dismal at best. With in two years of leaving WRJZ, the team of CP and Walker were no more. Yes, there will be some people, like yourself, that will quit listening to the River because Phil Williams is no longer on the air but not everyone will quit listening to the River because of his leaving. Phil Williams is part of the River but he is not the WHOLE RIVER!!!
Edited by jwk1979 on 07/18/05 03:16 PM.

okay, i have to say...i don't understand all this discussion of "who will be the first to go to jack"
we already have a jack station in knoxville. woki may call themselves AAA but if you can, just listen for a long period of time. they are a poorly run jack station. once upon a time they were a good AAA station, now it is like a winamp programmed by the entire family (with horrible imaging). how did West 105.3 become so much better than the river??
so why would our oldies or journal's wmyu decide to flip to jack when there is already a station like that in town. wimz could call themselves an oldies station since they play stuff from the 60's, but fact is...they are a classic rock station.

No, what I meant about the River drying up is that with it's smaller signal, it reaches a smaller audience and alot of it's listeners were forced to stop listening when they went from 100.3 to 98.7 because they couldn't pick it up anymore. I don't get to listen as much as I did before for the same reason - the 98.7 signal is just week.

I'll keep on listening to The River. I'm kinda excited to hear Phil by himself in the afternoons. Doing mornings on The River, it's just something about him that sounds restrained. It seems like he just wants to bust out and do his own thing. Maybe his own talk show will give him that chance.

Yeah, you're right about a format growing on you. I guess another reason the stations sound like a big mess at first is because we aren't used to hearing that much variety and other thing, the format is still new and the stations probably have to adjust to each market. I would listen to, if we had a local Jack station. We don't get anything until it's already done and overwith everywhere else.

You kind of missed your own point which should have been..what happened
to WRJZ after CP and Walker left! WRJZ did not survive, but you can't blame
this on the lack of a morning team...it was also the final years for music
on AM stations anyway. So actually, the example was a poor one to begin with.
Other than that...you're right on target!

The big problem with WRJZ was not CP & Walker leaving but WRJZ switching formats to country to try to compete with WIVK. CP & Walker did not leave WRJZ until several months after management switched formats. You could tell by listening to CP & Walker they did not enjoy doing a country music format at the time. Even if CP & Walker had stayed at WRJZ, I don't think the station would have lasted any longer than it did with it's country music format, then oldies format. IN OTHER WORDS, THE DEMISE OF WRJZ HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH CP & WALKER LEAVING BUT A POOR DISCISSION BY MANAGEMENT TO SWITCH FORMATS AT THE SAME TIME WNOX WAS SWITCHING TO A SIMULAR FORMAT.
Edited by jwk1979 on 07/19/05 04:43 PM.

I've got a question. I've slept alot since the 1980's but didn't CP & Walker move over to U-102 (WMYU) and have a fairly successful run over there? I think they called that show CP & Walker and The Breakfast Flakes. I remember an extremely corny tv commercial with a family sitting around a table eating breakfast and listening to U-102. On the front of the cereal box is a picture of CP & Walker.

I remember a while back when WMYU was Cool 93.1 they brought CP back for a short while to do their morning show. He did a pretty good job after they added a partner, I forget his name, but then they decided they wanted to target females and replaced CP with Kevin & Nicole from Channel 10. I liked his (I hope I get this right) Coach Billy Joe Tom Bob Parker Show he'd do before UT ballgames. I wonder how his fighting possums are today?

I think they did move over to U-102 after their morning show on WHIG 850-AM failed. I think they only lasted about a year and half on U-102 before Walker Johnson was forced to leave because of his involvement with his family of buying a low power AM station in Maryville, WMDR-AM 1470. He did a mid-day all request hour from Noon to 1:00 PM. This was about 1984. I believe CP remained on U-102 for several years after that.

It's funny that you asked the question, and then he's on WNML this morning.
