Journey Radio might be heading to Houston's 103-7

Cumulus has put the branded radio station in Atlanta & Cincinnati, as well as Pensacola, Fla & Huntsville, Ala. The station's branding is named after a Popular '80s San Fransisco-Based Rock & Roll Band, which specializes in '80s & '90s Pop/Rock, and some Hot AC. And I was wondering if 103-7 might be a target for another Cumulus makeover before The Atlanta-Based Radio Station owner is planning on taking over Citadel Broadcasting?

Very doubtful. 97.5 on the other hand, could be changed. Too many sports stations in Houston.

Evidentally, Sports is here to stay on The FM Dial. A lot of fans out here would love to hear The Astros, Texans, & Rockets on The FM side of Radio.

Oh great, that is what Houston needs. Another Pointless music station  Don't tell me Cox is buying Citadel.

If they do, True Oldies Channel will sound like the lame Eagle.

KHJK saw a bit of a ratings bounce in July, most likely from the demise of The Zone. Cumulus will probably wait to see if that holds or grows before making any decisions on 103.7. The ratings prior that were pretty awful.

The "Journey" format would be lost amongst all the similar stuff on The Eagle and The Arrow.

Just because a company flips a sister station 900 miles away doesn't mean they're going to do it to all of their stations that they own.

Well Cox Radio did one flip in Houston and did the same in Miami with the Point same format, logo and format, but with different frequencies, and call letters. The same with the Jammin Oldies format. WTJM in New York then KTJM in Houston. Although true not in every market, but they will put the same branding and format in different markets.

A few points (no pun intended) here:

(1) Cox never flipped any station in Miami to "The Point." It flipped stations in Tampa and Jacksonville, however.

(2) "The Point" was not a Cox concept. Randy Kabrich consulted it. Cox wasn't the only company to run it. Beasley flipped talker WWDB 96.5 to "The Point" as well at around the same time.

(3) WTJM (now WWPR) is presently owned by Clear Channel. KTJM was owned by Clear Channel when it flipped to jammin' oldies in '99. The two stations, however, were never co-owned, and different owners launched those formats. WTJM's jammin' oldies format launched under Chancellor Media/AMFM. Clear Channel had to spin KTJM off when it took over AMFM.

(4) Of course, Cumulus will duplicate successful formats in other markets. I think you're trying, albeit poorly, to say they're not the only company to do this. If that's what you're saying, you're absolutely correct. However, operators worth their salt don't just say, "Hey! We're having good luck with this concept over there. So, let's try it here!" They research the market to see if this new format is likely to work before deciding to pull the trigger. While you could make a convincing case that Cumulus makes poor decisions across its various markets and does poor research, you can't say they don't carefully plan it. If Cumulus takes 103.7 or 97.5 to Journey, it won't be because they're doing it elsewhere. It will be because their research tells them it will work.

No more 80's 90's and today formats. Please! Houston radio is flat as a tire, man. Too many stations vying for the same audience. Causing too many format flips when they all fail. Why can't we have the one format that this market has lacked since Cox killed Oldies 107.5. Only do it in a BIG way. The Cox consultants didn't believe in doing ANYTHING outside the box. That's why they had a playlist of only 250 songs (rotated over and over, until you cried uncle).

Bring back the great top 40 station formats and sounds, along with an unlimited music library (trust me. Someone out there will remember every single song you play. And that's another listener) and constant promotion. It will work.

What I don't understand is that Cox's KONO in San Antonio is a #1 station, so they obviously know how to program classic hits. Why was 107.5 so different from KONO? Are the markets that much different?

They have smart people running the San Antonio cluster. Here in Houston not so smart people. :p Ive never been able to understand why Cox Houston sucks so bad either.

SA's Cox are smart when it comes to running KONO, not so much with active rocker KISS since they slipped in some classic rock tunes when they already have a full time classic rock station. You're right, however. Houston's Cox aren't too bright.

80s in a market where The Point just failed would be a tough sell. I think the Journey radio concept is a great idea, it's just not right for Houston because an 80s station just dropped out.

If they do anything with 103-7 it'd be a near-simulcast of KRBE with a local sales office in Beaumont and 103-7 would break away during stopsets and run different, east Texas commercials to increase revenue. At all other times it'd be a straight simulcast of 104.1.

I'm sure Cumulus noticed the cost-effectiveness of what Cox just did with their adjacent signals and right now Cumulus needs $$$ after buying Citadel.

I wouldn't be surprised if this occurred. In fact, it's the most sensible thing to do with these adjacent signals. 97.5 is another dilemma for Cumulus as well.

What are you guys smoking? Cumulus already owns a heritage CHR in Beaumont.

Haha yeah i was just about to say that. There is no way that is happening. Thankfully. Houston needs more options to choose from not less.

Speaking of Journey--I've spent a fair amount of time listening to WJLQ Pensacola thru my phone, which they just flipped to Journey. It sounds a lot like "Jack" without all of the distraction. I really like the format.
