JOY FM REBORN ON 99.1FM

R

Rick Rose 2.0

After 12 years the St Louis metro area will have a signal to bring Christian AC music to all of the market. The old 104.9 the Bridge died when clear channel bought the station and made it Magic. Now a big 100kw will blanket ST Louis with contemporary Christian Music. Now KLJY-Clayton St Louis

The 1st song --- God of this City

Many of us have tried over the years, so to Sandy and the gang... God Speed and love on the Gateway City.... ;)

Not a resident of the area, what has become of or is becoming of KPVR on 94.1 and KHZR on 97.7?

Just heard them ID all three stations...gives them an impressive coverage area.

This is a day I have looked forward to for the last year and its very exciting. I can get 99.1 from Springfield, IL where I live and have been listening. I heard when they turned 99.1 on. It's an awesome day.

They're selling the ones in Potosi and Bowling Green (97.7 and 94.1 respectively). I guess they needed to since they were barely able to afford 99.1.

I was never a fan of Christian music but the whole praising to Jesus thing and "the Lord has answered our prayers" is a little insulting to me. I mean this would've never happened if it wasn't for the money raised by Albert Pujols and Andy Benes. To say that God had any part in this is borderline blashphemy in my opinion.

I'm a little bitter about this as you can tell.

The way the sale was handled smelled. We may never know the truth.

I tuned in yesterday and they mentioned that "God has given us this frequency." I guess God took it away from the previous listeners.

Christian Contempory Music (CCM) is big business with a lot of money at stake. As a business deal, which this was, this is quite a coup.

I wish we could have both.. Exejetical insight.. Both Catholic and Evangelical doctrine clearly has the position that God does use people of every background to accomplish the work set forth.. Yes, some like to twist, but those of faith are called to be the planters, sowers, reapers with the gifts and blessings they have... If it's time, labor or finance... The Gospel does offend.. But that's the way it goes.. Love often offends.. I hope UMSL and others can pick up the slack.. Still wonder why LCMS felt it was time to bail on 99.1?

Lookin' at it from both angles...

That's fair and this wouldn't bother me as much if it wasn't for the shady way this whole deal went down.

And the reason that LCMS bailed on 99.1 is pure and simple...money. They knew they could make a pretty penny selling the station instead of running it even though it was financially solvent. Everything that LCMS was low and unchristian and the way they treated KFUO-FM's workers was awful by giving them severance on the condition they not find work for 6 months.

Joy FM's name may be tainted now because of this but St. Louis and the areas surrounding it are fairly religious that people may look over their dealings in this fiasco and give them a chance.

Thanks for that insight.. I guess the radio 'wing' and management of the LCMS might have been acting way different than those mission minded departments in Kirkwood.. My non-radio fellowship and mingling with the Churches, leadership and layity of that part of 'The Body' has been pleasant and above board.. Sorry to hear how the media end ran it on the FM.... We must watch our doors and not be blind to the wrong things coming in from the outside.. Like the old frog in the kettle of water.. On the group running them, Sandi Brown is a solid radio vet and I have always enjoyed her angle on the CCM format (AC in Joy-Fm's case)..... I think with her at the helm, the Christian public and the general public will enjoy getting to know them and vise-versa... Still see a need for an outlet (somewhere in the metro) to provide classical programming...

As I mentioned in the Christian / religious thread, Saint Louis has had a local, commercial Christian station for years (since 2004) online at least. The Journey, which is the only non-traditional broadcaster with membership in The Missouri Broadcaster's Association and apparently is the main station for a traditional radio network on AM/FM in other cities. I first heard them on KCXL-AM out of Kansas City by mistake but they kept promoting the "local" Saint Louis station with their URL. The KC programming was similar but somewhat different than what they actually stream as a "local" station.

They're odd for Internet because during the day they do local weather updates and interrupt programs anytime for Amber Alerts or Weather Alerts, even overnight and weekends. They currently have two live DJs during the day who actually talk to callers and take requests. The music is much more hit / dance / rock / rap oriented than JOY FM has ever played and I've heard many of the songs on non-religious stations. They take requests online or by telephone and the telephone is actually answered by an operator before a listener can talk to the on-air dj.

Nighttime, following a news hour between 5 and 6 pm seems to be automated except when the weather service issues alerts or amber alerts. They carry live network news at the top of most every hour.

What I also find interesting is that The Journey is the only Internet broadcaster listed in The "Missouri Blue Book" (Official Manual of The State of Missouri) for several years , Missouri Information, see page 889 under Broadcast Stations. I'm not sure how they got that status with so many Internet stations on the web, but I think they do an amazing job and I like the programming a lot more than JOY-FM's CCM format.

Well besides KWMU-FM (Local NPR station) putting out a classical HD subchannel, not much else is going on to fill in that void. Although KWMU's efforts are much appreciated.

What is this void of which you speak?
The NPR station in Miami ran Classical 24 on HD2 until APMG came along and bought the local christian pop station WMCU for the purpose of changing it to classical, the opposite of what happened in Saint Louis. Of course the NPR station had to stop running the syndicated APM service as soon as the the new Classical South Florida began. FF a couple years, and CSF remains strictly analog and we hear all the popping, multipath, and noises common to analog FM. After one experiences an infinite s/n ratio, it becomes impossible to tolerate that "stuff". JVC has digital car stereo systems for under $200 and Radiosophy has had a table model under $100 for a couple years. We would entertain having a thread about the pros and cons of whining vs accepting new technology.

It is very sad that St Louis has lost it's only classical station. I find no joy in Joy-fm.

I suppose to classical fans, the calls stand for KilLJoY. ;)

I don't know if the sound quality of KWMU's HD-2 stream will be up to snuff for classical buffs, but their coverage (along with many other STL HD stations) is superb. I believe with just the Insignia portable in the car, I got the HD-2 solid from about 40 miles out to the south and west. It might be worth a shot.

Heh, I wonder if that was a freudian slip when the Joy FM folks came up with that one.

/I kid

Remember KSLQ? (In school the KSHE crowd called it "Keep Saint Louis Queer") and then the call letters changed to KYKY some years later... I can hear it now, "KY98...The Jelly!" <grin>

Funny? In the 70's 'The Q" was just ahead of K-SHE and they both were way behind KMOX... Joel Denver at the "Q".. Both great stations...

St. Louis has also had the Spirit for the past few years on KEZK HD-2, and online at IHeartRadio. It is a much broader format than Joy FM which stays to pretty much current AC type CCM. I would equate it to a Christian Version of an Adult Hits station - you might hear classic artists like Daniel Amos or Rich Mullins as well as new stuff from TobyMac, Mary, Mary, and other more uptempo stuff than Joy FM. I miss Classic 99, but I am glad to finally see Christian music on a big 100,000 Watt signal, and glad it is local and not a satcaster. Joy FM is a rarity in the fact that they are live 24 Hours a day.

Actually, we used to call it "Double Jelly 98, Lubed For Love!"
