Joy To The World

Just saw Joe Chille's note on Facebook promoting The New Joy 96 Point 1 FM. Woah! Did they revert to Schulke All Strings? Nope. No two second gaps after the song ends before the announcer cracks the mic to say "Joy... FM 96... All Music... All the time." Sounds like Joy is leaning more toward competing with Star and moving away from sharing with Classic Hits. The Joy music rotation reminds me of what Mix was doing about 18 months ago. Looks like the battle for 35-49 Women is about to heat up. Again.

Interesting. 'JYE seemed to add some '60s when WHTT abandoned them in pursuit of 35-44 AC format. Now that 'HTT is back as Classic Hits, "JOY" is skewing younger. Maybe they sense some weakness at Star. Maybe they think that 'HTT will grab their older demos anyway. Maybe they've decided that they need to get stronger 35-44, and dropping 40 year old music is the way to do it. Should be interesting to see how they do squeezed by 'HTT in the upper demos, and by the Star/Kiss monster in the lower demos.

Boy, this is real cutting edge, idea stuff for jye. The same brain surgeon consultant that told them to drop the popular name 15 years ago, now says to bring it back, just because the station has had no identity or branding for a decade and a half. This is the BEST they could come up with? This is a big imaging change? Something that listeners knew them as anyway? They are following the same flawed path as their bankrupt brethren, HTT, who did the exact same thing. When are these idea-less wanna be consultants going to get a clue? This is such a no-brainer!

There is so much to say......but so little...SO.. I won't (except to say, I'm glad I'm out of this business!!) ;D ??? :(

What a joke, and lack of any creativity for this radio station. It simply exists, no passion, no pulse, just the same beat up ideas that have brought the industry to where it is today. But then again, i would expect nothing less of a small time operator like Regent. Just pathetic

Most people remember the Joy brand, but IIRC it was completely unlike what they're now doing or have done as WJYE. It's not like when 97 Rock returned or even when WHTT flipped back to Classic Hits. AC isn't really an engaging format. I can't imagine a groundswell of listeners texting, emailing or calling each other saying "Hey, did you hear? JOY IS BACK, you gotta turn it on!" And the word "Joy" almost begs being parodied on a show like 30 Rock.

The WJYE format alteration, adding more 80s and 90s, dropping most 60s while rotating a few 70s each hour is a clear attempt to attract Women 35-49 while trying to hold on to the 50-54s. The Joy jingles sound campy. The over-EQ'd canned female backsells copied from B-101 Philadelphia are another annoying format element. It sounds like just another way to remove the life and personal connection of the radio station. Star has a more human, personal texture which complements its (slightly less vanilla) music rotations and helps it score well with working Women 35-54.

Regent made changes with WJYE, now will they do something to turn around the sinking ratings on Jack?

Jack is a disaster too. You would think they would try to localize it, even a little, just with some inexpensive, on and off air imaging, but no. It is just wallowing on the dial, just there, no ratings, no revenue (very little), no life. Just a shell of station. Is is no shock that this company went chap 11. You have 4 freaking FM's, and only 1 is a top biller! That is real dedication there! You would think that they would attempt to get more cash flow out of 4 great signal FM's, instead of just depending on 1, especially since they way overpaid for the entire enchilada. What a waste Regent is. And by the way, if YRK was not the only country FM in the market, that would change too. YRK is no longer a great, passionate station. They are doing well by default. in ratings and revenue.

sidenote:

the Major problem, with Jack-FM(92.9)
..it sounds "good enough" on the aire,
either when it goes to break,
(w/ a 'cheap') voice-over, of whats
going on.....to the general public,
it seems they dont "need" to try....
sad.

Why complain, Supe? If Regent's failings are as pronounced as you say, the make life easier for competitors, no?

Jack... is just wallowing on the dial, just there, no ratings, no revenue (very little), no life.
Seems the same can be said of The Lake, which has been stagnant for years now.

I am not "complaining" at all, just venting and sharing, and competiton is good, i welcome it, infact i love it. I don't think anyone wants to "win" because someone else "failed" I am looking at it from a good broadcasting point of view, and it's not good. I would love for Jack, and all stations, to be a great stations with compelling programing and being a great corporate citizens. Some are, but many are not. It would help radio, in general.

As far as Lake, if you know what i don't like by now, then you probably have your comment answered.

Looks like WJYE is going full bore with its re-imaging effort. The Joy TV campaign is up and running (heavily, it appears) and clearly appeals to Women 35-54 (with testimonials from in-demo women using words like "newer," "younger" and "fresher") while discounting Women 50-64. Looks to be a very spirited competition between Regent and Entercom. Joy, Star, WYRK, Kiss and WBLK are targeting similar demographics in the Spring book. What station and cluster will own the "Wall of Women" and "At Work Listening Derby" when the dust settles? No wagering, please.

Noticed the TV blitz. I'm still curious to the reason for the realignment. Does Regent perceive weakness in the Star/Kiss audience mix at Entercom? Are they having trouble selling their product since it's weighted 45+? Are they anticipating significant erosion on the upper end because of WHTT's shift back to "Classic Hits"?

If "JOY" deems is necessary to shift younger, how long before 97-Rock recognizes that the '80s happened?

I think the only reason for the "realignment" is becuase they needed "something", and since most consultants have no clue, they just did a focus group, everybody referred to it as "JOY", and that was that. Simple and no thought. They also need a reason to get more ad dollars, which they have severely lacked. Now they can smile when they talk to clients and say "we have a big tv campaign going on" and "lot's of new listeneners will be tuning into the station". Its all bull.

I get the idea of repositioning yourself and changing your imaging and positioning slogans.

But why is WJYE going back to a tagline that means nothing to a lot of their target audience--and to those who DO remember it at all from 1979, is synonymous with "elevator music"?

My guess is that the audience they're after won't remember it from 1979, and half the people out there call it "JOY" anyway. Great call letters. Might as well take advantage of them.
