JR Ammons OUT at Star

H

After 2 years PD JR Ammons has left the Star 94 Penthouse at 3350 Peachtree in Buckhead. ;D

Hmmm.....1.2 Mhz up the dial from a certain future program director's dream station. How about it Mr. Millman? Start here, take the station to Number 1, then WZGC will certainly be calling you! ;D

I'm assuming not by Ammons' own accord.

Is this the beginning of some massive changes and re-branding or simply a PD swap?

Opinions?

Wow. I'm not sure how much latitude he had. Formatically the station sounds really good. My main complaint is the music. These days a lot of rhythmic that used to be too urban is mainstream, such as Jason DeRulo, and Star 94 won't play it. If they want to be Hot AC, fine, but they're not Hot AC either.

The other problem of course is mornings, but there was little JR could do there.

Baaaaaa. That's the sound of another scapegoat getting kicked out of the pen. Apparently nobody has the ability or the balls to make Star a true CHR, put Cindy & Ray back in afternoons, and field a morning show that can compete with Bert. Much easier to keep firing people a few notches under you on the totem poll so you can evade notice.

Then again, seriously, what's the point of a broadcast FM music station in the modern world?

You can make Star a true CHR or you can put Cindy & Ray back in afternoons. But not both.

You are 100% correct. True CHR does not have an almost-talk show in afternoon drive.

Hadn't JR been at Star a long time, like since the 90s? Maybe I'm confusing him with someone else.

JR came to Star in the mid-90's. In the beginning, he was a weekend jock and I think Music Director. Then he became APD/Promotions Director. He left several years ago to become a PD, first in Kansas City and then in Jacksonville. He was rehired at Star at the start of 2009.

JR did the best he could within parameters dictated from above. A tough task, to say the least. Star either needs to re-embrace its heritage and reclaim its AC audience lost to B, or they need to blow it up and make it something new. The brand is entrenched. Positive connotations for adults, negative for young adults. I'm a big believer that great marketing cannot overcome bad programming, but in this case, I think the opposite was true. Station sounded fine. Too much AC baggage associated with the brand.

I'm not so sure you can "market" a great radio station anymore than you can make people buy tickets to a lousy movie or save any product under performing. The product has to be great, or at least necessary. Star 94 is neither at this time.
They can change a player but that doesn't fix the problem. And an even bigger problem is the owner. They'd LOVE to be rid of this facility and probably regret asking way too much for it and missing the chance a couple of years ago.

I think you are correct that marketing won't save a truly bad station. However, I've heard too many stations that I actually liked that "conventional wisdom" said were bad. Maybe Star 94 is beyond all hope, but generally speaking, even a station that most people don't like can still attract enough of an audience to be profitable if the people running the station make sure that they people who'll like the station know about it.
