JR and Eluka Heights?

What is this JR and Eluka Heights I keep hearing at the beginning and ending of these 3 songs?

Solo by Iyaz - Solo, Jason Derulo - Whatcha Say?, Jason Derulo - "In My Head"

What is said is actually "Beluga Heights" which is the record company that Jason Derulo and Iyaz appear on (and so does Sean Kingston).

The JR you hear is the founder of the company, J.R. Rotem.

J.R. is also the producer of those records =). As well as a host of other hits on the radio.

So now we roll credits during the course of a song. A sign of the times, I suppose.

At first I thought it was piraters putting their "name" on it. Then I thought it was part of the station's liner when I heard it...""Columbus/Upper Arlington/Kaluga Heights...". It clutters the song. :-\

Having a "signature" saying, sound, or word in certain productions/songs is nothing new. Although... however, Beluga Heights could've concentrated on making their pronunciation and saying a bit more audibly understandable. Have you ever typed in "Deluka Heights" and various versions of what people could mistake it as in google only for google to already somewhat know what it is you were looking for - because many other people were also trying to figure out the same thing? Not sure how much it helps to have a nearly non understandable name thrown into a song, but then again, maybe it's not understanding what they are saying that is really important, but just knowing that when you hear it, you know it's the same producer that produced "that other song" you heard. In the end, if you / people begin to realize "I seem to like every song with that signature / saying in it", that's all that really matters - you recognized and realized you tend to like things with their trademark. Besides, I guess it kinda worked because not only are people talking about it, but it even became a topic of this board!

I'll take "Beluga Heights" over "DJ CLUE!" or some other things I've heard over a record, numerous times throughout a song! However, I'd say Timbaland is pretty much my fav when it comes to his signature ways because he leaves his signature mark in his music in creative ways, especially more so in his late 90's productions. I think Missy's "REMIX!!!" signature on her remixes that seemed to catch on in the mid 00's was pretty good, too. That was different... until everyone else started using it and people started making drops that yelled "reeeemmiixxxxx!!". Lil Jon has his unique signature style, and so does LMFAO's Party Rock productions.

Beluga Heights could sell advertising spots.

On each track along with the JR shout-outs, they could throw in a "drink Pepsi", "Geico", "shop Target", etc.

These could easily be worth millions of $.

Stop giving people ideas! You never know who may be viewing this thread! Even I'm looking at this, saying "I never even thought of that... it could work" even though I don't want it to happen. You see how radio stations have already been found a way to insert their jingles with station name into songs, so as a fight to have less commercials, you NEVER know if someone will jump on this idea or not! I can imagine it now... done exactly how the JR or Beluga Heights or even DJ CLUE does their stuff!!

Another example is Akon with his trademark jail door slamming and the word "konvict", from his Konvict Records label inserted in the intro of all his stuff.

I edited the "Beluga Heights" out of "Whatcha Say" for when I play it at my events. I usually don't edit songs like that, but it's just so out of place and has nothing to do with the song.

I laughed when I saw the subject line of this thread. For the longest time, I was wondering the same thing. I'm a pretty big fan of CHR music and like those three songs that were mentioned. I kept wondering what "J.R." and what I thought was "Veruka Heights" were.

And yes...I also forgot about Akon's jail door and "Konvict" thing. Haha! This was a great thread. Thanks to everyone for clearing this up! ;D

It's funny because I have developed a signature sound that I started using in the beginning of my mixes without even realizing it. After a while, I began to recognize a pattern and thought "hey, I've been using that sound a lot lately, so I might as well just continue doing it and make it a "traditional" part of my mixes for now on. I consider my sound to be like the "Shady Aftermath" logo of dj mix shows ;D

As I was walking down the street the other day, I passed a church. The name of the church was Lincoln Heights. I almost couldn't keep a straight face. I thought it would be rude to just walk in during evening service and ask them why don't they consider changing it to "Beluga" instead. Then my second thought was to try to join the service and become a member of the choir band and production staff just so I could create a "Lincoln Heights" promo and put it on the gospel songs they use during practice. Of course, none of the results from my brainstorming actually materialized.
