JR on 93.7 the fan

I thought he put on a strong performance myself from what I heard.

One thing about someone like JR, and I would hope program directors in Pittsburgh would take notice, is that JR is a broadcaster.

Where I'm going with this is it seems all too often sports radio stations in Pittsburgh look to hire people who have been solely writers and then put them on the air. While this seems like a good place to go to get a knowledgable host, and I'm not saying it isn't, all too often the writer seems to be personality challenged.

Yes, I realize hosts like Myron Cope and Mark Madden have come from the writing game. But it would have been apparent in their first job interview that those people were personalities.

Right now I'm counting at least six people with regular sports talk shows in Pittsburgh who came directly from sportswriting. Some hit, some miss.

But it just seems to me to be a rather large number. If you look at the lineup of WFAN in NYC, which I have always felt was a great model for a sports talk radio station, they don't have nearly as many scribes on their airwaves yet do a great job relating to their fan base and breaking news.

Just a thought. Bill Hillgrove came from being a DJ to being a legendary sportscaster, and Stan Savran from the broadcast ranks as well.

Just ask yourself if you think it is more likely for the next great talk show host to come from the ranks of making sure there are commas in four-digit numbers and words are spelled right or if they come from a background where personality matters.

The #1 reason by far that writers are hired as talk show hosts is the fact that they have income as writers, so the station doesn't have to pay them full-time money. Same goes with hiring active TV people.

I've heard JR the past 2 sundays. Yawn. He's clearly out of his element and out of his comfort zone and does not add a thing to Dunlap. Just because you can talk doesn't mean you can do sports talk.

There are many things messed up over CBS. I think it was good that JR was able to stay in the CBS family. Is this Fan gig a regular fulltime job?

What the hell happened over at Star 100.7? They sound awful in EVERY daypart!

CBS wants Star to go younger, which it has done since the B was blown up. However, they seem to recycle old talent and won't let them go. Bubba-you gotta go. You've been on youth radio since the...80s. Shelley-Doesn't belong on Star. Melanie-Gotta go. Bring back BuckHead from the 313 (Detroit) and ACTUALLY change the name, not this "100.7 STAR!" crap.

I know I've said this before, and I know everyone can't pick it up, but IMO WVAQ is already doing what Star is attempting (and miserably failing) to do. It skews slightly more adult than Kiss, but it's so subtle you can't even put your finger on what it is. Not that I think they are trying to compete directly with Kiss - I think it's more that they are trying not to alienate anyone since their market is smaller.

Star's music isn't the problem to me. It's their jocks. They are all terrible!

Scott Alexander is like walking into a house and seeing flowery wallpaper on the walls with blue carpet. He's OLD! And, he sounds old!

The guy at night is awful, in both his voice, lack of personality, and creativity. The afternoon guy has no wit to him either.

The girls are the least offending to me. Although, I liked Melanie way better doing her own show.

Oh yeah, Bubba is the WORST! He should've been kicked off years ago.
