Juan's Shuffle Lunch (on B101)

In the face of competition from a completely unproven foe, B101 has made a move that just seems a little sad to me. I don't know why they're doing it. I love B101 but this Shuffle Lunch is just silly. The Web page about it even includes an image of an iPod.

It's particularly pointless since it doesn't even claim to play anything you wouldn't normally hear on B101: "Hear any song on the B101 playlist at random during the hour!" It's saying the show "shuffles" songs that are already on B101's playlist. Isn't that pretty much what Selector does anyway?

The most exciting thing that can happen is that you'll hear two Elton John songs or two Billy Joel songs in a row (since both of them have about 47 songs in B101's rotation at any given time!). And even that'll never happen since the show is surely programmed just as tightly as the rest of the day! Just...sad.

Wonder if they would have done something like this even without the unproven foe? Does seem reactionary though. It's a classic re-packaging of an existing product.
Has anyone noticed that they now are without a jock at night?

BTW, E., are you being completely honest about your feelings for B101?
You said you love the station, yet you sound like a pretty lousy lover! :)

They reacted to Sunny too and that wasn't even necessary since I don't think Sunny's had any real effect on B101 at any point during its existence! I'm glad they finally got over that and went back to being the old B101.

From what I understand, they've been looking for a night jock for quite some time.

Yes, totally. I am a huge B101 fan. It takes at least 45 minutes for them to play a song I dislike but sometimes I can listen for hours and hours. All the other stations in town play a song that turns me off after 20 minutes at the most!

That is definitely the first time anyone's ever said that to me! ;-)

Re: Juan's Shuffle Lunch hey great life style bit

I would imagine B has the top money demo in town.
I would imagine most B listeners have all the latest things (like an ipod)
I would imagine SAYING the "ipod shuffle" is shooting fish in a barrel for relating to the B audience.

New name for the B?

So in the 90s, Eazy 101 changed its name to "B-101", to better fit what had evolved into an AC...

Now that they're doing a "Shuffle Lunch", how about "101.1, Jerry FM, Playing what Jerry Lee Wants?"

They aren't changing the name. It would be stupid to do that. The "Shuffle Lunch" is interesting, but we all know the idea came from "Jack" or "Ben".
______________

I'm already tired (not to mention nauseated) by this whole "shuffle" trend.

Why does radio feel the need to try and beat the IPOD on their own ground?
If anything, they should (re)introduce the human element.
Do they really think listeners are that stupid??

Don't answer that...

I would imagine that Imagine from John Lennon could be part of the "shuffle lunch". :)

I can't remember the last time B101 jocks came on at night. They've probably been pre-programmed for some time now. Then again, even when they're live they quite often just read the script. In December, I was not so sick of hearing Christmas music as I was sick of hearing Juan Valeta use the same one-liner hour in and hour out. "B101 ALL CHRISTMAS MUSIC!" like it was a new concept to the listener and not something they'd heard >= 15% of the year for the last three years on two-three different stations!!!

I tend to think Sunny had no impact precisely because the B reacted in just enough of a way as to "cut them off at the pass." And they did the same to the Point/Mix along the way. Unlike, say, Eagle 106's horrid reaction to Q, most B listeners probably noticed nothing, and found themselves with no reason to tune out.

That said, I wish on a personal level they hadn't brough back that cursed Saturday at the '70s stuff so I could listen to them as I drive around on the weekend, but c'est la vie.

The shuffle lunch sounds like a simple way to do absolutely nothing to change the format and give it a gimmicky name. If it happens to take a swipe at Ben, ok, fine...so what? Their listeners all know Ben is out there, this just sounds like a reason to listen to the B without resorting to a gimmicky "all 80s" or whatever kind of sound. And no average listener knows any differently.

About the same here...well, Saturdays not withstanding.

Oh my, this may be the most interesting conversation the board has seen in a long time. :)

B101 just puts me to sleep, in fact I almost crashed my car yesterday when I accidently left it on my radio yeaterday for 5 minutes. They should just change their name to BQuiet, they could just have a sweeper come on between songs and simply say...Sshhhh, B-Quiet, We're all sleeping

It is a dumb idea. I like the name, but it is just a name. The music is exactly the same.
