http://www.allaccess.com/net-news/archive/story/94227/slater-to-join-kcsn-los-angeles

Julie Slater is the latest notable to join the staff of KCSN/Los Angeles. Slater will host "Out On A Limb" Saturday nights from 9 to 11PM.Slater, afternoon drive host at KSWD/LA, is also a veteran of WXRK/NY and Sirius-XM.

KCSN Program Director,Sky Daniels, commented, "We are thrilled to have Julie Slater join the growing ranks of tremendous air personalities to help build KCSN. It is a very classy gesture for Dave Beasing, PD of KSWD, to allow Julie the opportunity to spread her creative wings by hosting "Out On A Limb".

"Julie is going to develop 'Out On A Limb', a show dedicated to playing both the most creative new artists as well as some of the most critically acclaimed legacy artists that have not always gotten their due on broadcast radio.", added Daniels.

Slater joins the lineup of 88.5/KCSN new hosts and shows featuring Nic Harcourt, Robert Hilburn, ETown, Acoustic Cafe, Buzzbands L.A. with Kevin Bronson, and the Grateful Dead Hour in augmenting KCSN's lineup of adventurous weekend programming for Los Angeles.

Slater will concurrently retain her afternoon drive slot at KSWD/LA.

I think this is a good move for all parties involved. This allows a for a bit of "co-branding", even if the stations do not cross-promote (which they should when given the chance), in the sense that Julie's listeners at the Sound will have a reason to follow her to KCSN where they can hear her play more adventurous music that market realities simply do not allow the Sound to experiment with. In addition, KCSN gets another "name" talent which will bring it more attention to them down at the end of the dial as well. Lastly, Julie gets a "show to play with" much like Mimi Chen does on Sunday mornings.

I agree with Sky about KSWD being classy about these things. Back when they were planning the KMET day, they invited the KMET jocks currently employed at Citadel/KLOS to come and specifically said that they had no problem the KLOS DJs promoting their own shows back on KLOS while they were there. They made the event more important than the day-to-day competition, which was the right thing to do for an event that will most likely only happen once. I think it was Dave Beasing that said something to the effect of, "Of course Jim Ladd can promote his show on KLOS. Who in LA doesn't know about Jim's nighttime show on KLOS?"

Just giving an opinion Manny. Nothing personal. I just don't understand why it is that the station has to present itself as having pea size balls
and zero testosterone. What is the crowd they are going for? I don't blame the PD, he's just doing what he was hired to do.
I just do not see them succeeding until they lose the preconception that they need to be so white break milk toast.

Why don't you send your enlightened take to Sky Daniels ([email protected])? When you do, make sure you cc Ann the Raven ([email protected]).

Let us know how that goes.

Don't need to. Sky reads this board.

I have huge respect for Sky.

It's the overall format constrictions that I'm not so sure about. Even if he can't say it, I'm sure he wishes he didn't have to adhere to
certain criteria that's been spelled out for him.

Whoever Ann the Raven is, I don't mind her seeing my opinion. If she has anything to do with the 0.0 showing then perhaps she could use some outside input.
I'm giving it because I think it would benefit them to take off the water wings.

-- I see, so you're saying "Hey look, they have a dark skinned DJ who plays blues" so therefore the other 7 days and 20 hours is not soggy whitebread..."

Well, I'll lay money that Ann would agree with me.

Really? That's why you listen to the left side of the dial? Really? Haven't listen for a while myself, but c'mon. The station is being programmed by someone with huge "commercial" experience, so what did you expect? The real question is, what are they saying? Is it of relevance? Is it thought provoking or informing? If so, you're actually getting something commercial music stations stations shy away from. But as we always used to say, that's why there's a dial, just change the channel if you don't like what you hear, there's more than enough stations on the Southern California airwaves to choose from and plenty of them have better signals than KCSN.

Sky, that Beatles show intro is painful. Les needs to learn something about moderation. I'm just sayin'.

And we can discuss the wisdom of blowing off a sizable percentage of your cume with four hours of 40 year-old music in the heart of Saturday at another time.

Otherwise, keep up the good work.

I think this is a great move! So was hiring Nic. Sky is moving the station in the right direction, more "professional" yet still musically creative. Word of mouth will spread but patience will be the key.

The station is sounding better by the day.

The new imaging was desperately needed. Up until now, their liners have always been the same - some nasally liberal arts student type guy saying "KCSN. The Music You Want" in the most monotone robotic voice. Combined with the overabundance of acoustic music and Sarah McLaughlin records, it is why I once labeled them the sleepy hound. But no more. As would be expected of a commercial guy brought in to upgrade the sound and increase listenership, he has made the playlist more accessible (read: more gold catalog hits from traditional rock and AAA artists) while still keeping an overall large on-air playlist with plenty of new artists, and he has made the station much more upbeat.

There have definitely been some imaging and on-air screw ups over the last few weeks (such as the same liners running back-to-back), but I chalk them up to growing pains and I am sure they will be worked out. The one thing I do hope goes away is the pre-recorded spots introducing the new records. I can understand them if the station is running on autopilot, which is sometimes the case, but the ones I have heard have been in the middle of the day during the airshifts. You have DJs now, let them tell us about the records. The audience will get to know both the DJs and the records better.

As a somewhat off-topic aside, going back to the addition of more gold tracks, I amused myself with the observation this past week of a representative difference between the Sound (and commercial classic rock in general) and KCSN (and AAA in general): The Sound plays too many Police records, KCSN plays too many Sting solo records.
