Julius May's Thoughts on WPHT

Does anyone think that CBS will change the format and call letters of 1210 AM in the coming weeks? I hate to say it but unless ratings doesn't improve and IQ widen its lead, this could very well happen. For my sake, I hope that CBS doesn't blow up WPHT. It would be a huge blow for local talk radio in the Delaware Valley, if it happens.

1210 AM complaint

I would like WPHT to please start joining programs like the brokered and paid programs in progress or even shortening them, following games that the station airs, so that the local talk shows can air on time. For too long,  local general talk shows start late or don't even air because 1210 decides to run the paid and brokered programming in its entirety. I don't think that makes any sense that those programs get higher priority, than the general local talk shows. I hope that 1210 would think about changing this. It doesn't make any sense to me at all.

No, but it makes dollars for WPHT. Those are paid programs. They PAY for a full half-hour or hour, and they pay handsomely for the time. They're never going to be shortchanged just so a later talk show can start on time. Not gonna happen. Never. Ever. Forget it. Get on with your life.

Re: 1210 AM complaint

To quote former WNWR talk show host Ron Joseph: "Brokered shows give you what you want."

(Pop quiz: How do you think Ron got that talk show on WNWR?)

Re: 1210 AM complaint

Agreeing with HGN and D to the J: A money-making client isn't going to be shoved around just so a TV simulcast can start on time to please you, Julius. Grow a pair and get on with it.

Re: 1210 AM complaint

if i was paying for half an hour, and i couldn't get it so that a local personality could go on instead, i'd be one pissed off person. personalities are cool, but hey... i paid for that time slot and well, you're not gonna keep me as a consumer paying for a time slot you as a station refuse to air.

Re: Future of 1210 AM

I bring this topic up because you radio experts might want to start thinking about this possibility. I don't know if its going to happen but for my sake, I hope it doesn't happen and that 1210 WPHT talk radio will stay around for a long time.

Re: Future of 1210 AM

As stated on an old Internet talk show the reason behind his obsession with 1210 is because his birthday falls on 12/10

no need to explain why you're bringing it up... it just seems every little thing that  goes on with these two station , you notice, which is why i wondered if you were a P1. seriously dude, do you listen to KYW and PHT on an exclusive basses ?
Yes, but I mostly listen to and record KYW. WPHT is number 2. I only record 1210 AM on occasion.

Re: Future of 1210 AM

If 1210 were 'blown up' into something else it would have very little impact on the radio & general community compared to when WCAU-AM was 'blown up' in 1990. WCAU was a widely listened to general interest news, talk & sports station that served the area for decades. WPHT was an attempt to revive talk on the frequency after a few years of oldies & syndicated sports talk. WPHT tried 'hot talk' & lifestyle talk then went to local & syndicated 'preaching to the conservative choir' talk. WCAU had opinionated local hosts that still managed to garner a 'general' audience, especially with excellent news coverage, but WPHT had no general appeal & when the syndicated shows left the conservative audience went with them - apparently they don't like local hosts, they want the national shows.

I don't know if it's too late for WPHT to try & change to something with more general appeal. Why does NJ 101.5 work so well? Ok, a huge FM signal, but its an all local talk station that works because they have a strong news team, frequent traffic, and hosts that discuss local topics of interest that seem to appeal to a general audience, not necessarily conservative or liberal issue topics. WPHT is still depending on old-time shows going back to WWDB. Because we have an all news station, people here don't have to listen to talk radio to get 'news-talk' like smaller markets. People DID listen to WCAU news because it had a dependable full time staff. The problem now is, people who don't listen to conservative political talk radio think that's what 1210 is and WON'T listen, and people who DO listen to conservative talk radio have moved to 106.9. And 2 of the strongest AM signals 1210 & 990 are preaching to conservatives who aren't listening.

WPHT means very little to most people. I'd prefer they make it the CBS Sports Radio affiliate along with the play-by-play they have and make 610 AM WIP a music station again, even on a budget as a satellite-fed station of what we used to call 'soft rock' in the 1970's but is considered "adult standards" today. Even without local jocks running the same feed as WDEA (not sure which programming service) from Bar Harbor Maine would be better than the bland talk on 1210 today. http://wdea.am/

Today's schedule on WPHT

Schedule changes for just today it appears on 1210 AM WPHT, Gary R'nel on this afternoon from 3-7 PM, JD Hayworth in for Gary 7-10 PM, then Rich Zeoli on at 10pm-1 AM. Zeoli will be back Back with Steve tomorrow from 3-7 PM. Why is 1210 messing around with the schedule? You are confusing listeners.

3 names I have never heard of and never even saw mentioned on this board that I remember...I'm assuming they're all party line
Limbaugh wannabees?

I'm not familiar with the others, but JD Windbag Hayworth is a former right-wing Arizona Congresscritter, radio talk-show host, and TV sportscaster. His style is reminiscent of Foghorn Leghorn, only less intelligent.

Major station annoucement tomorrow

1210 running a promo saying "listen tomorrow at 11 AM for a major on air personality announcement." according to a source at the station.

The mix that PHT has had really just doesn't work. It seems as though they tried to be all things to all people and wound up being nothing to anyone. They need to blow this thing up and start over. Music is really not an option so some type of talk and/or news is really all that is left. Sportstalk won't work since I can't see the market supporting 3 stations and news will be tough because of KYW. That leaves poltical talk. 3 options - go 100% local (except for overnights), go left or go right. Hitch the wagon to one of those and do the best you can.

PHT has really put itself in a bind.

I have a feeling that CBS might blow up WPHT before the new lineup debuts, depending on the ratings that are released later today.

1210 needs to stop messing around with the schedule. They are confusing and chasing away listeners when you move hosts around to different times. For example the afternoon duo of Steve and Rich are on Gary R'nel's time slot now and R'nel filled in for them during the 3-7 PM show today.
