Just a few random TV related events that happened on July 13 (not much today). Discuss or comment as you please……

1924: Game show announcer Johnny Gilbert (currently Jeopardy, with a host of other credits over the last few decades) is born in Newport News, Virginia.

1940: Actor Patrick Stewart (Star Trek: The Next Generation) is born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, England.

1956: WCBI-TV (channel 4) begins broadcasting in Columbus, Mississippi.

1984: Brothers premieres on Showtime.

1985: The Live Aid concert to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia is broadcast live to an estimated 1.5 billion viewers in 100 countries. It remains one of the largest-scale satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..)

I can recall Brothers premiering amid a lot of controversy. A very talented cast included Brandon Maggert, Paul Regina, Philip Charles McKenzie (who is married to one of TV's truly funny ladies, Alison LaPlaca), and Hallie Todd.

It all seems so distant and mundane now. If it were debuting in today's conditions, Brothers would not be a big deal. :-\

I have never seen Brothers though I remember hearing about it.

I noticed in the IMDB listing that Gale Gordon ( yes the same Gale Gordon from all of those Lucille Ball shows ) appeared on Brothers. That is VERY surprising considering that Gale Gordon for a number of years was a big outspoken critic of TV sex and this show dealt with homosexuality !!! Gordon even turned down a chance to be on The Love Boat only a few years before Brothers because he felt that show was "too dirty" and I believe he did the same with Three's Company though his friend Lucy was a big fan of that show.

Reading over this a year later I just now realize..Gale Gordon was NOT on the 1984 Brothers Showtime series, but THE Brothers, a 1956-57 CBS sitcom about two brothers who own a photography studio in San Francisco..Starring with Gordon were Bob Sweeney, Barbara Billingsley, Ann Morriss and Howard McNear

ESPN's Chris Berman brought this one up on Monday...

1960: Mark Scott, host/commentator of "Home Run Derby" dies of a heart attack just 11 days after the final episode of the show's first - and only - season aired. The producers cancelled the series shortly after Scott's death. HRD airs occasionally on ESPN Classic.

2010: On the 50th anniversary of Scott's passing, New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner dies. Coincidentally, he passed away on the date of Major League Baseball's All Star Game AND the morning after the MLB Home Run Derby (no relation). ESPN sticks with Sportscenter for most of the day to cover reaction to his passing, melded in with the run-up to the game (which aired on Fox).
