July 16: This Day in TV History (another DIY edition)

I also couldn't find a July 16 TDITVH from Stanislav from last year, so it looks like another DIY edition is in order (I don't have time to do a complete research of all notable TV events from July 16--so feel free to add/comment too). I'll start the thread off with a few July 16 birthdays:

1907: Orville Redenbacher (d. 1995)--born in Brazil, IN. Of course, we all know his claim to fame . . .

1907: Barbara Stanwyck (d. 1990)--the venerable actress also earned an Emmy for the short-lived "Barbara Stanwyck Show" (1961-62), and also appeared on "The Big Valley" (1965-69). She also appeared on "Dynasty," "The Thorn Birds," and "The Colbys."

1924: Bess Myerson--Miss America 1945, among other roles (and a foray into politics) she was best known for her panelist role on "I've Got a Secret" from 1958-67.

1943: Jimmy Johnson--the former Oklahoma State, Miami Hurricanes, Dallas Cowboys, and Miami Dolphins head coach and current co-host of "Fox NFL Sunday" was born in Port Arthur, TX.

1956: Jerry Doyle--born in Brooklyn, NY. His acting credits include his role as Michael Garibaldi on "Babylon 5."

1967: Will Ferrell--the actor and former Saturday Night Live cast member was born John William Ferrell in Irvine, CA.

Also on July 16 with implications on TV history (and the news coverage that resulted):

1999: John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn, and sister-in-law Lauren Bessette were killed when his aircraft he was piloting crashed into the Atlantic Ocean en route from Essex County Airport, NJ to Martha's Vinyard. (Can't believe it's been already 10 years since that tragic weekend).

Stanwyck also appeared in the 1964 Elvis Presley flick "Roustabout" and like many of the women who had appeared with Elvis in all of those movies, there were those rumors that those two ( Stanwyck & Presley )...well they had a fling during the filming. Ah Yeah I don't believe it either but the weird thing about this is, depsite the rumors over the years of Elvis having his "flings" with so many of his female co-stars ( from Judy Tyler to Barbara Stanwyck to Ann Margret to Nancy Sinatra to Mary Tyler Moore ), I don't remember ever reading in the past where any of those women had actually went public to totally deny those rumors though I do think Ann Margret and Mary Tyler Moore "somewhat" denied them but not totally. Maybe they wished they really did had that fling with Elvis Presley and wanted people to think they did. Who knows !!

Of course Elvis himself wouldn't deny it.

Will never forget those "corny" commercials.

I don't think Ann Margaret still denies it.
As far as Elvis & Mary Tyler Moore, that one I never heard. The rumors I heard were Dick Van Dyke & MTM.

Pretty much any female that co-starred with Elvis either actually had a "fling" with him (some) or, at the least, fell in love/lust with him (most). I remember reading that Donna Douglas fell head over heels for Elvis while filming "Frankie and Johnny." I don't think it went much beyond flirting and making out between scenes, but it's said that Douglas really fell hard for him, and was heartbroken when the film ended and he went on to other things without pursuing anything deeper with her.

And I have seen where they have gone back to using some old footage of him in their newer commercials, so never say never when it comes to using the deceased in television commercials! I think the point is to do it tastefully, and in sort of a "retro" fashion, which Orville Redenbacher's popcorn company does, but also in such a way that you acknowledge that you are aware that he is deceased. And his popcorn company does that, too. They really only use him in the tag line of their commercials.

I still want to know about Mary Tyler Moore & Elvis. That's one I had never heard about.
How did they cross paths?

Elvis & Mary did that movie "Change of Habit" in 1969.

Rather than go into long, sordid stories (and I could), let's just say that it's relatively commonplace for co-stars to have flings with each other that last about as long as the film is in production, and end once the production wraps, and they both move on. It happens often.

And Donna Douglas refuses to talk about it to this day. Very similar to Max Baer Jr ( Jethro ). Not only did he date Sharon Tate back when he was doing the Beverly Hillbillies but for a brief time in the late 70's he also had dated Playboy model Dorothy Stratten. Of course we all know what had happened to both women. Because of those horrible crimes involving Tate & Stratten which of course Max had nothing to do with..however none-the-less Baer refuses to discuss either relationship to this day.

I'm well aware of the affairs & flings that took place while filming, but MTM & Elvis still seems strange to me, but anything is possible in Hollywood.

Why would that be strange? Elvis, among other things, was a full year older than MTM. Did you ever see her in the early years of The Dick Van Dyke Show? Very appealing woman. Her dancer's legs, which were all that were shown of her in the 50's series Richard Diamond, Private Detective, were always a big water cooler topic back then.

That's the great thing about show biz: Anything can happen! 8)
