July 19: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on July 19. Discuss or comment as you please……

1953: KIMA-TV (channel 29) signs on in Yakima as central Washington’s first TV station.

1974: Actor Joe Flynn (McHale’s Navy), aged 49, is found dead, floating in the swimming pool of his Beverly Hills home. Although some express suspicions about the death, it is ruled an accidental drowning.

1978: Actor Topher Grace (That 70’s Show) is born (as Christopher John Grace) in New York City.

1991: The quirky sitcom Hi, Honey, I’m Home! begins a 13-episode run. The show, with the irresistible concept of having a typical 1950’s/60's sitcom family “relocated” to the 1990’s (with all the attendant cultural clashes) was, initially, the first “instant rerun” show on broadcast/cable TV, with the first six episodes airing on ABC, then being repeated 2 nights later as part of Nickelodeon’s “Nick at Nite” lineup. Much of the fun of the show was derived from appearances of actors from classic sitcoms (such as Gale Gordon, Jim Nabors, Al Lewis, Eva Gabor and Ann B. Davis.) reprising their old characters in guest roles.

1996: The horror anthology series Tales From the Crypt airs its 96th and final original episode on HBO.

2007: Former evangelist Tammy Faye Messner (ex-Bakker) appears on Larry King Live in what would be her final interview. Extremely gaunt from her cancer (she claimed in the interview that her weight was down to 65 pounds), her emaciated, cadaverous appearance engenders shock and sadness in most, even those who had been her detractors. Less than 24 hours later, she would be dead.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

The final appearance of Tammy Faye Messner was actually recorded two days before it ran. She showed much courage making that final appearance.

Comment: We all know there's been lots of dreadful people in the televangelist field. No need for me to make a list. Tammy Faye Bakker/Messner was not one of them. She never acted like royalty or like she was better than anyone else, unlike some women in that category I could name. She would cheerfully talk to anybody, sign autographs, and pose for pictures.

If she was guilty of anything, it was choosing first husbands.

Perhaps if televangelism had been blessed with more people like Tammy Faye, it would have a better name.

Another July 19 birthday (and a "golden birthday" too):

1990: Steven Anthony Lawrence, best known as Bernard "Beans" Aranguren on Disney Channel's "Even Stevens" was born in Fresno, CA.

Or wearing a bit too much makeup! :D

Seriously, she did seem to be a genuinely nice person (I got to hear her speak once after the PTL scandal died down).

There was a pretty good documentary on Tammy a number of years back. Unfortunately, it seems to be quite hard to find today. (in fact, I don't even remember the title, does anyone?)
