Just a few random TV related events that happened on July 2. Discuss or comment as you please……
1928: W3XK begins operating the first regularly scheduled TV service in the U.S. (some say in the world), and the first intended for reception by the general public. Operated by Charles Jenkins Laboratories and broadcasting from Wheaton, Maryland (just outside D.C.), the station would operate until 1934. The 48-line mechanical scanned signal was broadcast first at 1605 kHz, moving to 6420 kHz, and eventually settling in the 2000-2010 kHz range. The first 18 months of “programming” consisted chiefly of silhouette images from motion picture film.
1941: CBS Television Quiz debuts on WCBW (now WCBS-TV) and earns the distinction of being the first regularly scheduled TV game show, airing until the spring of 1942. There had been previous “test episodes” of quiz/game shows, including a one-off TV version of Truth or Consequences the previous day on rival WNBT (now WNBC-TV).
1954: KGEO-TV (Channel 5) hits the air in Enid, Oklahoma. Its transmitter and studios would later be moved to Oklahoma City, and the station would change calls to KOCO-TV.
1955: The venerable Lawrence Welk Show premieres on ABC, where it would find a home for the next 28 years.
1973: A newly resurrected Match Game debuts on CBS, with Gene Rayburn returning as host. (The original version ran on NBC from 1962-69.) The premiere of the revival had been delayed one week due to network coverage of the Watergate hearings.
1984: The TV version of the classic board game Scrabble premieres on NBC, hosted by Chuck Woolery.
1985: Alice ends a 9-season run on CBS.
1993: Actor Fred Gwynne (Car 54 Where Are You, The Munsters) dies in Taneytown, Maryland, aged 66. DYK: In addition to acting, Gwynne also sang professionally, painted, and wrote and illustrated children's books.
(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..)
