July 22: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on July 22. Discuss or comment as you please……

1922: Comedian Dan Rowan (Laugh-In) is born near Beggs, Oklahoma. He was born on a carnival train, and toured with his parents and their signing and dancing act until he was orphaned at the age of 11.

1940: Game show host Alex Trebek (Jeopardy!) is born in Sudbury, Ontario.

1953: KLAS-TV begins broadcasting on channel 8 in Las Vegas as Nevada’s first TV station. The station was later for a time owned by Howard Hughes, who infamously used the station as his personal movie channel, often calling engineers in the middle of the night to order them to pull the plug on a flick he didn’t like, and to spool up another. (Reportedly, his favorite film was “Ice Station Zebra.”)

1954: WTHI-TV (channel 10) begins broadcasting as Terre Haute, Indiana’s first TV station. It would remain the market’s only station until the sign-on of WTWO in 1965.

1991: China Beach airs its final episode on ABC.

1996: The Daily Show debuts on Comedy Central.

1998: The sitcom Ellen ends its run on ABC after 109 episodes.

2003: Nip/Tuck premieres on Fx.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

One additional July 22 birthday:

1928: Orson Bean (born Dallas Frederick Burrows in Burlington, VT). The TV credits of this renowned actor (who is also a second cousin to former President Calvin Coolidge) has included guest hosting stints on "The Tonight Show" (under Jack Paar and Johnny Carson), "The Twilight Zone," "The DuPont Show with June Allyson," "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman," and "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman."

Don't forget his long stint as a panelist on To Tell the Truth. That's where I first encountered Mr. Bean. (As in Orson, not as in Rowan Atkinson...) ;D

Plus, along with Chuck McCann and other funny guys, he was one of the founding members of The Sons of the Desert (the international Laurel & Hardy fan club).
