Just realized that “July book” may not be the proper term…I don’t think they refer to single-month data as “books”…oh well, call it whatever you want…

A25-54

KT'R #6

KFWhyEye #13

KYOT #23

Time for the #Thirteenith station to take the dial position of the # Twentythirdith station so it can close the gap with the # Sixthist station*.

* the preceeding recommendation has been made for three consecutive years now

I'm afraid I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with my Buckeye Consultancy Hut buddies on this one. In fact, in the "Business of Radio" section last week, I broke down the factors I felt are leading KTAR-FM to success. I also briefly touched upon KFYI and how I thought moving it to FM is not (currently, at least) necessary.

According to July 6th's Radio Ink, success with sports on FM seems to be the current apple of the CEO's eyes. At least for Dan Mason and CBS Radio.

It did take a while to find your posting, KOOL Lauren, but Nurse Jeff came through once again (he's a great gofer..err, golpher)

And KTAR-FM has improved tremendously, as DavidEduardo mentioned. You can attribute several factors to their improvement:

1) Presence on the FM dial. I don't feel it's necessary, but it couldn't hurt. In KTAR-FM's case, they seem to be a younger, hipper, news/talk station and FM fits it well. On the contrary, KFYI is a good example of a station that does not need to make the move to FM anytime soon, and I wouldn't advise it necessary for news/talk just yet. The move to FM can only do so much.
2) Change of personalities. The addition of Joe Crummey to evenings, the combining of Mac Watson and Larry Gaydos in PMD...
3) KTAR Rewards program, which has been running for a few (or several?) months now. Great incentives to listen, and win great prizes.
4) This is very important: An improved online and social networking presence, through their very own website, through Facebook and Twitter. Not just the station identity itself, but the hosts and news reporters are effective in what they are doing.

These are only a few of the factors I find are building KTAR-FM up. It's really sounding impressive lately.

We respond point by point:

1) KT'R is a younger and hipper sounding station than KFWhyEye, but it's taken them three years to get it right. Meanwhile KFWyEye is saddled with being on the unhip AM band; their talkers are longer of tooth than KT'R's, plus their ultra conservative approach tends to attract listeners whose teeth have been replaced with dentures.

2) Agreed. Savage sounds ancient and Dumber and Dumbest are a real alternative to the constant haranguing of JD Loudmouth. Advantage KT'R.

3) More of a benefit for the Sales Department than for the average listener.

4) Agreed otra vez. This is a smart strategery for atttracting younger listeners (like tech savvy Lauren) and developing relationships that will pay off in the future. It just wouldn't work for KFWHyEye while they're on AM and programming to older listeners who don't have a clue about social networks.

You've made some very good observations regarding the sound and approach of KT'R. As long as the competition is a station on unhip Ancient Modulation with programming oriented toward an older audience, KT'R will sound and perform better. But put KFWhyEye on 95~Five and fine tune their programming, then we'll have a real horse race!

In the spirit of celebrating diversity, Nurse Jeff has invited KOOL Lauren to have a brew with me in the Controlled Substance Garden of our Buckeye Media Hut. If my persuasive logic and Middle Eastern charm doesn't change her mind, then I'm sure a couple of six packs chugged down in an hour or so will do the job!

Each PPM report, covering 28 days, is a book. There are no trends or rolling averages; each stands on its own. Part of the change is bue to the difference between a weekly changing sample and a permanent panel.

Stick KFYI on 95-5, and you've got KTAR-FM circa 3 years ago. If by fine-tuning you mean blowing out everything that isn't named Rush and hiring people that are 20 years younger maybe you've got a shot. Otherwise, it's all Medicare talk, just in stereo. So, here's the big question: if you moved to KFYI to 95.5, would the combination of KFYI on FM and whatever format got plugged into 550 bill more than 550 KFYI and 95.5 KYOT?

The majority of the news/talk stations moving from Ancient Modulation to FM have seen almost immediate improvements in their 25-54 numbers. Nurse Jeff and I don't think it would take the Smokeyboss to tweak KFWhyEye as long as the Master Blogger took. When KT'R made the move, Pat McBland did mid-afternoons...Paul Harvey and the Noon news dragged on for a full hour...and Ted Simons did PMD. zzzzzzzzzz

So, here's the big question: if you moved to KFYI to 95.5, would the combination of KFYI on FM and whatever format got plugged into 550 bill more than 550 KFYI and 95.5 KYOT?

That's what keeps Clear Channel from making the logical choice. But if they don't put KFWhyEye on FM pretty soon, they'll see further revenue erosion on both stations. The 25-54 on KYOT is even more anemic than KFWhyEye's. Hmmmmm.....Smooth Jazz Five-Fifty ...Kay Why Oh Tee
