July numbers

Here are the numbers for July:

Nielsen Audio Ratings

It appears that 101.5 has improved and might be completive with the Bull. Of course, this is only one ratings period. 100.5 had a good month despite or because of The Braves. WCNN has been falling since the April so no Braves “bounce” for 680.

Is this the first time 107.1/102.3 has placed ahead of iHeart’s Spanish language formats on 105.3/(now 105.7)? I know they’re different formats, but interesting to see.

The format changes/adjustments at 94.1 and 105.3 appear to just be stagnant.

Remember that low share stations have a much higher margin of error than ones with higher shares. So a 1.1 and a 1.8 are likely the same.

It will be interesting to see if the Rhythmic AC format at Star had a novelty bump or has some staying power. In other words, did a lot of people tune in when it was new, and now they are going elsewhere?

Star's cume is still quite strong. So a lot of people are tuning in for short periods. They need to do something to increase their TSL. I did hear a promo on which they "guaranteed" not to play the same song twice during (I think) the day on weekdays, and if you caught them playing a song twice, you would win. That's a good start.

I’ve been streaming Power, and they sound really good. I’m interested to see when they can overtake Q which sounds pretty stale in comparison.

Q99.9 has new, well new or recycled, talent in middays and afternoon drive, and that seems to be helping them. But from 7pm-midnight, they have no--not even voice-tracked--talent while Power has a live local jock.

Of course in mornings, Q has the highly popular Bert Show while Power plays tracks from the prior day's live Jubal Show.

Maybe it’s just me but I find Q more bearable than Power simply because I feel Q has a larger playlist. I mean it’s top 40 at the end of the day so turn and burn is the game but at least it seems Q will broaden the playlist a bit.

WSB-AM is on the list, but I don't see WSBB-FM 95.5 MHz. What am I missing?
Ratings include all stations on a simulcast.

Is there an easy way to know which station, WSB or WSBB, has the higher number of listeners?
No. I am sure 95.5 has many more listeners but Cox has them tied together. I guess you could buy Cox Atlanta Cluster and find out. The ratings are for advertisers' agencies who are looking for certain age demographics. The agencies do not care if it is AM, FM, or steamed they just want the commercial heard by the targeted group.

I see the construction permit to move WTSH tower closer to Atlanta has expired on 7/31/2021. Th move was from Kingston to northeast of Rockmart.

That surprises me that Q has no on air presence, even via syndication or voice tracking after 7pm. Most other Cumulus stations voicetrack, have the occasional live jock, or run the syndicated Zach Sang show.

Q gas come a long way from 2010-2011 when they were back and forth between Hot AC and CHR. They’ve sounded like a true CHR for a while now. That was an awful period to try to find a decent CHR around Atlanta.

Given that Q has to worry about Power 96.1 instead of Star 94, that's expected. During its Hot AC days, Q100 used to clone its playlist for sister station KRBE in Houston.

Oddly enough, KRBE sounds like a Hot AC as of now, with the heavy presence of gold tracks (a lot of them being more than 5 years old) and hesitance in adding new tracks in general, but especially reggaeton, dance, and hip-hop.

Zach Sang's show is targeted very young, probably too young for the audience that Q is going after.

For a while in the early 2010s, under Jan Jeffries and co., Cumulus CHR’s were very top down and next to no adds were done on a local level. They mostly copied Q who was trying to compete with Star and it was a blanket approach across the country. I remember several #1 top 40 songs being ignored by Cumulus because they were hip hop/rap (Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass” in 2011 comes to mind immediately). Q also had The Groove/Beat to contend with. I think around the time of or after the bankruptcy, Cumulus handed a lot of music decisions back to the PD and local level, and Q dropped the adult/Hot AC lean and has been fairly straight up CHR since then. Also, Power came on the scene around then.

Star always intrigued me. They apparently did well enough somewhere for Q100 and B98.5 to be so scared of them. I guess B98.5 is the de facto choice for Hot AC listeners now with Star’s different approach and the fact that B98.5’s playlist while not true Hot AC resembles more of a typical Hot AC than mainstream AC which is careful with new adds and still plays 80s and more 90s music. B98.5 is almost of the “fresh AC” (is that still a thing?) variety.
