i always thought what killed 99x was the music...and the music's successes.
as alternative became more mainstream, it wasn't alternative anymore.
the 99x listener didn't want to listen to something OTHER PEOPLE might listen to. well, nobody except their close friends that were equally cool. but the format and music grew in popularity, and became less avant-garde and more mainstream.
???
I have no clue where you're getting this from - Alternative has gotten LESS mainstream in the past 10 years, not more mainstream - only about 5% of what 99X plays overlaps with CHR or HAC (or at least the CHR and HAC stations in Atlanta)
well, maybe i'm wrong on that. i'm no expert on alternative.
something i think you may have missed, though. i didn't mean that the music had crossed over to CHR or HAC. what i meant by "more mainstream" was that it had a wider audience, and wider acceptance. and, therefore, it was less "alternative." not less alternative in the musical definition, but in the literal definition. if everybody is listening to it, it's no longer an alternate.
and it was about 10 or 12 years ago that 99x started adding active rock to the mix.
